Screwloose
The miss fire is when its under load, but not all the time, when its hot, however the hard starting has got worse over the winter, the moter turns over but wont fire until the battery is nearly flat, the car seems to start ok in the day time, but it seems to happen when its been standing ovenight . The first time it happend i had to call the recovery man out, and to prove me wrong it started first time for him!!

When it finally starts, does it splutter into life reluctantly, or just suddenly start on all cylinders at once. Do you get a cloud of smoke out of it at that point and, if so, what colour is it? [It has got a relay 30 - just checked.]
Has the temp sensor for the engine management ever been checked in live data when it's cold? Has the hall-effect sensor in the distributor been changed? What's the 3-wire plug on the side of the distributor like - corroded?
Most important of all; has it had a new coil?

It splutters in to life reluctantley, smells of fumes, but not petrol, not sure about the smoke or colour,
I dont think that the hall-effect sensor has been changed i am getting the car back on thursday,i will check the condition of the 3 wire plug and yes it has had a new coil/amp
I dont know if this is important but about 2 years ago. after the car had been standing for a week ,i drove the car and it was missfireing really bad spluttering an no power, called the aa ,he said we had to take it to my nearest garage.the engineer took the car out, he got aout a mile and the cat exploded.he fitted a new cat.but said petrol was going straight to the cat, he said he thought it was a problem with the ecu,i transported the car to a main dealer,i recall he fittet a replacement ecu. had to take it back, as it would not idlei think it never ran properley after that. !!

When the car missfires under load when hot is the coil (very!) hot to touch?
Who services the car, is the correct oil being used? Does the car turn over really quickly when it fails to start? Have the cylinder compressions been tested?
Where in the country are you, maybe someone could reccommend a specialist nearby?

Dox
I have not felt the coil, i will when i get the car back.
my local garage services the car, the correct oil is used.
The car does not turn over any quicker when it fails to start.
I live on the the wirral

Hi i got the car back to day ,it started great first thing this morning ,and its been standing all day, and again it started ok later this afternoon ,so fingers crossed.
However yesterday i went to our local VW main dealer with the veiw of purchasing the relay 30 / main power relay. just in case.
the guy in the spares said he coud not identify it !! is that the correct description i gave him ?
Thanks for all your help gti jo

He obviously hasn't been working in a VW parts for long! Most storemen know what a "Relay 30" is as it's got "30" painted on it in big white numbers!. [The diesel version is 109]
To give it it's correct title, it's an "engine control relay." [Or engine ECU feed relay; or engine management relay; or.....]

My relay 30 has the part no. 165 906 381

would you beleive it, i picked the car up from the garage 9.30 yesterday it was fine all yesterday,
come to start it this morning , would it fire ? would it ###############
The garage guy said he went home in it a couple of nights and it started ok for him.
it was - 2 % last night ,i finally got it started just before i flattened the battery,
I managed to purchase the relay 30 , i have fitted it,and the car seems to be running ok
i will have to wait till the morning to see if it starts then, i wont hold my breath.
I got the relay from euro car parts in chester the guy i spoke to was very helpfull ,

The sarga continues
After fitting the new sensor 30 yesterday, and another water temp sensor.
this morning at 8 am it would not start for about 5 mins when it did burst in to life it run well and ticked over ok.
I am now thinking fuel.
yesterday thoughout the day it started fine with no missfire,i tried starting it up till 9 pm last night.
sorry to be a burden, but has anyone got any futher ideas.
I appretiate that i will have to take to the garage again ,maybe the main dealer this time, but its cost a fortune up to now,
thank you all Gti Jo

What do we have left to try, it is all a bit like a shot in the dark. Hall sender, fuel pump, filter and pressure regulator, earth point under battery and earth braid between coil and head. I would still try water mist on the new coil, what have got to lose and it costs nothing.

Time to go back to no cost basics. When your engine will not start do you have a good spark and does a removed spark plug smell of petrol?

Good news
I spoke to my daughter yesterday, who had a similar problem with her Mk 1 gti golf,
she said that when she started the car,she turned the ignition on and left it for about 20 seconds or so before she stared the motor, and this did the trick for her !! ( you could hear the fuel pump ticking in this time)
So this morning i tried the same thing and it started first thing, i am wondering if the problem is my fuel pump,or like relay 30 ! could there be a intermitent pump relay fault. if one is fitted to the car ? (i have mislaid my hand book)

My Mk3 AGG GTI fuel pump is audible from the drivers seat for about 2 seconds when you turn the ignition on. Fuel pump relay is situated on bottom row far right hand side, No.167, VW pt. No. 191 906 383C.

Check fuel pump fuse No.18 for good contact and condition.

I forgot to mention earlier
"it started again first time this morning"
leaving the ignition on 10-15 secs before you engage the starter.
I might have cracked it

I've been reading your threads with interest and was wondering if you changed the fuse pump relay? I have a intermittent problem with my Mk3 GTi 2.0 8v. It stalls when hot and is difficult to re-start from hot.

Hi Paul T
The car has been ok for the last week,if you turn the ignition on and leave it for 10/20 seconds before you turn the engine over,it has been starting, however the last tho days it has been a pig to start, Todat i have just fitted a new pump relay (167 ) and checked the contact on the pump fuse.
I have had a closer look at the earth strap between the block and the ignition coil,it has a plastic coating on it,
where its conected to the coil it appears to beonly a 1/4 of the width conecting it to the bolt !!!!
it was mentioned ealier that this could be a probmlem, but i must admitt with the car starting for the last week i thought all was ok, (and the missfire has also returned under load)
Why has any of the garages that the car has been with recentley noticed the earth strap ?
I will fit a new strap when i can get one and report back when its fitted fingers crossed!!!
Regards Gti jo
