i'm building an AUTOMATIC trike for a disabled friend and he wants me to use his alfa flat four engine from a 'cloverleaf'? did alfa make one? is there one made by someone else that might / will fit? it needs to be the transaxle type to allow it to be mid engined and also to gain access for the rider. many thanks in advance.

Hi, ambitious project! Alfa did used to do a cloverleaf, there was a 145 cloverleaf though not sure it might have been an earlier one that had the boxer engine?? Try www.alfaowner.com/forum plenty of knowledgable people on there, also there's a classified section you might be able to get some parts you need?

Didn't the Alfasuds have a flat four, and 33s and other Alfa's of that time? Seem to remember it was those cars form which I first found out what a "boxer" engine was. Sure there were some auto versions of the 33.

The alfa boxer engine was used in the Sud, Sprint and 33 etc. It was mounted north-south with gearbox behind the engine and diff under the gearbox (front wheel drive).
However I think the OP is asking about an auto transmission for this engine and AFAIK there was no auto transaxle used with this engine. I don't know of any other one that would fit.

Deffo no Auto Alfa flat 4. First ever Alfa auto was Alfa 6, then 164. Scooby would be my choice.
|
what would i do with the rear wheel drive output?

where did the alfa boxes come from and where else were they used? I would try looking at fiats, find a model that used the same box then find an auto option.
I know people convert old skodas to alfa boxer engines, dont know if an auto box was ever available with the 130 series though.
theres always the 911 or 912? Might pick up a 912 engine with an auto box? Or a beetle ? would have the advantage of being air cooled.

The box started life fastened to the fiat 1100 and 850,Alfa Romeo 1100 guilia or Guiliette and various models back into 50's they were as all Alfa/Fiat boxes due to soft second gear syncromesh cones sods to get into second gear when they had done a few thousand miles .Jowett Javelin/Bradford van had the boxer format engine in both 2 and 4 cylinders the javelin I believe had an option for an electric change box but I may be getting confused with Armstrong Sidley

Moto Guzzi offered an air-cooled V-twin with an auto box.
|
Also early Daf offered a flat twin with their "auto" box.

I would hardly call a rubber band an auto box .
|
That's why it was in inverted commas!!!!!!
