My car was in being serviced today and I got a courtesy vehicle. It was a Mazda Courier crew cab pickup. Looked as if it was about 10 years old but I was quite pleasantly surprised by it. It had auto, air, and a basic but reasonable radio. It was rough and noisy but you expect that from a commercial vehicle. The interior was very basic with bottom grade trim and hard black dash. No oddments cubby holes, no cupholders but I really liked the thing. It was so basic that it gave me a feeling I had stepped back about 20 years. I was left with the impression that it would be very rugged and able to give good service at minimal cost for another 10 years. Not comfortable but dependable and cheap to run. I hope the shiny new model Hiluxes and Tritons haven't lost the basic simplicity and ruggedness of the standard Japanese one tonner. I am beginning to see why people are buying them instead of cars.
