Does anyone have a very high-mileage Jap diesel and can report on their experiences/costs ?
I have been looking at the prices of the new shape Avensis & Accord diesels..... very pricey even 2nd hand ones that are just outof manufatcurers warranty.
The only affordable vehicles coming off the fleets have all done 80-100,0000 miles, and are a little cheaper, although not significantly it seems.
DOes anyone know what work these engines are likely to need doing at this mileage, and in the next 50,000 or so miles ?
I know these co.'s petrol engines are pretty bulletproof and good for £150k + ( I have an old petrol toyota now) but will this carry onto the new diesel engines ?
My dad had one of the old-style citroen diesels and I know injectors and glow-plugs need replacing after a while. WHat is the likelylifespan of these components and whats the replacement costs on the Jap diesels ?
Is work on these a specialist job, as I know older diesels needed injectors calibrating with special equipment.
Cambelt changes required retiming of injection pump too.
or does the ECU automatically reclaibrate these things on the newer engines and it is just a matter of fitting the new parts ?
Id be thankful of any knowledge about these cars anyone has.

When I was looking for a diesel Yaris, I saw 3 that had done 105k, 113k and 120k Miles. All sounded and ran perfectly.

If your buying new I would seriously compare the stats on the derv and petrol varieties, it seems new age dervs are dropping down mpg where new petrols are increasing mpg and knowing that jap petrol engines run forever Id be tempted to get one of them if the difference in mpg is negligible

Hi..
Main dealer Toyota & Honda prices are just stupid for used cars....
I'm probably buying 3 or 4 years old i.e. something thats just 1 year out of the manufacturers warranty, as they are usually out of the dealer network and slightly more sensibly priced, although even if they are up on miles some are a bit cheeky on the windscreen price.
I thought the point of these new diesels was the advanced technology increased both economy and power ?
I know the performance is excellent - is the economy of these Honda & Toyota diesels not so good then ?
I am just not sure of the maintenance costs......
My sisters family have 2 Mondeos 2.0 petrol and diesel. The diesel is much quicker to drive than the petrol, and does nearly double the mileage on a tank........... Diesel is a company car so not able to really gauge service costs as its taken a way and then delviered once serviced, all bills taken care of.

Unless you buy a soon-to-be-replaced model, maybe 12 - 18 months old, when the dealer has a few too many.
New Accord in 2008, I believe.

There seem to me to be a lot of head issues on some Toyota diesels - the 2.4 and 3.0 used in the Surf/Prado/Colorado seem to be affected. Toyota seem to have been pretty good at covering the cost up to 5 years old.

My Accord has just broken 90k (company car) - 3 years old in March.
Engine not missed a beat so far and drives better than new! Never put any oil in it (at home it stands on a slope so oil is very rarely checked.
Only failures are seat motor at 9 months, clutch cylinder squeaking (I didn't notice it but they did - 75k), Rear seat tipping mechanism (Tourer) has been lubricated a couple of times as it needs help to operate but has been like that from new.
Wear and tear - Front Pads at 50k service, set of discs at 75k service, 2 sets of rear tyres, 3 sets of front (plus one puncture)
Got it for another year so wil report back at 100k and when it goes.
|
Just to add - it is a company car so I don't know what the parts/labour costs were.
It has averaged 50 mpg overall from new and the best tankful was over 56 a month ago so economy is not dropping off. Don't know what some people do to get 40mpg as the worst I have ever has was 43mpg and that was running laden at over 75 across France.

I remember your early reports: I think you were a bit concerned at the highish consumtion but it seems to have become much better. Any software revision carried out? BTW, Honda Civic 2.2 diesel owner locally reports well over 50mpg average, so maybe the engine requires mileage to free off?

Mine has not varied much on consumption but colleagues have not done so well.
All that has changes with the miles is that it is comfortable at 30 in 5th which it wouldn't do before 10k!
