Scenic 1.9dci power loss / light on - mad un
I have a recurring problem! My 2003 Scenic dCi started showing its glow plug / electrical fault light accompanied by a loss of power. The following was sent in an email to the Renault dealer where it received its second 'treatment'. They reckoned that the computer hadn't been reset after the work by Citroen, and they reset it. It didn't work and nothing has changed from the original write up below:

'The engine loses power intermittently, in conjunction with the yellow glow plug / electrical fault warning light coming on. This can last for between 30 seconds or a few minutes. It can run a 50 mile trip without happening, happen two or three times within 10 miles, or only happen once in a trip. When the light comes on, the car will maintain the speed it is at, but lose any overtaking power and starts to lose speed if travelling uphill. As soon as the warning light goes out, the power comes back. Citroen replaced the glow plugs and the EGR valve (see paperwork) but the problem remains'.

The car is due back in with Renault next week, and my warranty doesn't cover diagnostics! They say they have been on Renault Net, but this fault isn't a known problem. This is a potentially dangerous fault and we now avoid overtaking anything unless there is a huge safety margin. Not good!

Has anyone out there had a similar experience? Please Help!

Its not a known problem ,they are telling you lies its extemely common on all Renault 1.9dci the solution unfortunatly is not.You need the car on a Renault dianostic set up to have any chance of finding the fault ,common causes are EGR clean or replace, one of the temp sensors around the car this is a hard one to find,Maf sensor can be cleaned or replaced. There are large numbers of the same problem on this forum some found the fault others did not and sold the car I had the same problem on a Laguna never did find the problem .

Why are Citroen playing around with your Renault?

My thoughts exactly. A big mistake IMO letting anyone apart from Renault or a good independent diesel specialist tackle these. I doubt Citroen have the software to read the codes, the local independent Renault specialist near me has recently updated all their diagnostics, which implies things have changed.

There are a lot of reported problems with 1.9dCi engines, although because this engine was so popular even quite a low problem rate will still translate into a lot of disgruntled owners. More on Parkers website, including details of the Yellow OTS if needed, although your problem may bit a simple one.

Surely Citreon == Peugeot == Renault in everything but name? I bet you a pound that Citroen's diagnostic computer will be fine with the Renault system.

Don't know if it makes any difference but if he is talking about a 2003 Scenic 1.9dci, then that might be the original 105bhp dci in the facelifted Scenic as opposed to the 1.9dci (120bhp) model that has allegedly suffered so many problems in lagunas in the early years?

Renault have absolutely nothing to do with PSA - at least not in recent years. I doubt very much that Citroen would have the latest software - why would they bother?

These are complex engines and not all the sensors feed back signals to the central 'brain'. Only those who see these engines on a regular basis will have built up an adequate knwoledge pool to fix them. It appears that even some Renault dealers have problems getting them running right...

The only thing that Renault has had to do with PSA Peugeot / Citroen in the past couple of years is to buy the ES9J4 3 litre V6 24 valve petrol lump of them.

Renault are currently dragging Nissans faultless reputation down to there own level now which is a real shame.

sorry to drag up an old post, was a solution found to this problem? my sisters '02 scenic rx4 with the 1.9dci engine has just started to randomly lose power with coil light on and spits out black smoke at same time, no engine management light on permenantly though just coil light when power is lost. i suspect either an egr of maf fault but thought id see if the OP had an answer to his fault

We had an identical problem, after replaceing the egr valve, which was full of crud, we still had the fault, it turned out to be that the small pipe that connects the inlet maniflold to the map sensor had come loose and was resulting in no MAP sensor signal causing light to come on. It took me a live rolling diagnostics session to determin which sensor was faulting but was a free solution. If need be i can send you pics of ours showing which pipe i a m refering to, its on the right hand side of the engine bay oh the firewall, the glow plug module is next to it, its a small orange sensor (i think) and has a small 2mm bore rubebr hose connecting it to the inlet pipework...

Hope this helps
