My escort recently ran out of fuel (I know I'm an idiot!!). I have followed all the instructions in the Haynes manual and now the car will only start if the primer pump is rapidly compressed. The engine will then run for maybe 30 secs to 1 minute then it shuts down. There is no air at all in the fuel system it just seems as though the pump has given up the ghost and died. I cannot understand how this could just happen as it was working fine up until I ran out of fuel.
Any help or advice on this subject will be most gratefully received.
Thank you in advance.

if you have ran out of fuel you my have damaged the diaphragm on the lift pump. if you are confident of being able to do so, remove the lift pump, strip it and inspect it for damage. if it looks ok then look at the seals on the filters ensure they are fitted correctly. it does sound like a suspect lift pump though. they're quite cheap anyhow. > wayne

I would agree that the diaphragm in the primer is the no.1 suspect, especially if it's the Bosch one with the little black button. I think you were able to buy repair kits for these at a time, although they may be cheaper now than they once were.

If there was no air in the fuel you would nnot be able to "pump is rapidly compressed" are you sure that when you first reprimed the system the primer seal has not split and is letting in air. Is you primer the one on the N/S of the engine with a rubber covered button. Regards Peter

Once the engine has started it should not stop unless there is a leak in the priming pump;there is no lift pump as such-fuel is sucked up by the injection pump.
