WORLD'S TOP ROAD SAFETY EXPERT KILLED BY BUS
THE world's leading expert on road safety has been knocked down by a bus and killed.
Susie Stephens, 36, died as she ran across the street during a conference on how to cut road deaths............
...............The driver of the tour bus said he didn't see her in time and was not charged.
But friends believe the law should be changed.
Barbara Culp, of the Bicycle Alliance, said: "We want to criminalise acts like the one that killed Susie.............

Unbelievable. But not funny, mind.

No, it's not funny, but certainly criminalising jaywalking might cut road deaths.

You think what happened to her *wasn't* harsh enough??? ;-)

Not at all my intention to give that impression, and I'm sorry if it read that way. I was trying to indicate this was an example of the bias indicated by many 'single interest' groups, which was, if anything, attempting to capitalise on a tragic incident. To indicate that the coach driver had to be at fault, so much as to need to be criminalised, completely ignored the possibility the fault could lie with the pedestrian - typical 'cars are bad' approach. Pedestrians are the vulnerable ones in vehicle/pedestrian accidents, but crying for the drivers to be automaticaly guilty is not the way to improve road safety.

Dave ,
But it won't deter others will it?

If death by jaywalking was legally defined as suicide, thus, for example invalidating many life insurances, we might, as pedestrians, be a little more careful as it would affect our families circumstances.

John S - Quite the opposite mate I am 100 per cent behind you!
The smilie [1] indicated I was joking!
Jaywalking is far more dangerous than speeding yet ignored by the powers that be!

Sorry Dave - so concerned I'd been misinterpreted I missed the smiley!

I live by a HMP which had a pelican crossing fitted outside several years back. Not a week goes by that I don't have to slam the brakes on 'cause a warder steps out into the road 10m short of the crossing because they can't be bothered to use the crossing. And if you point out the purpose of the crossing you get a load of **** words back or "why the **** don't you look where you going - didn't you see I was going to cross"
