Hello all,
I am 18 years old and have my Insurance policy renewal coming up at the end of the month. The quotes online don't reflect the actual prices you get over the phone i.e. online it said it cost me £840 but £1038 when I rang them. I have a Volkswagen Golf 1.6 Match 16v and will have 2 years no claims on 30th January, also my 19th birthday, when my policy expires.
Can anyone recommend any Insurance Companies that give good quotes to young drivers? My best quote so far is £909.
Cheers

Admiral were by far the best for me. (Like £2000 down to £1000, the best)

Have you tried those on-line comparison websites, like confused.com (think that is the name), they will search brokers and bring up quotations - it will give you an idea of the lowest approximate level they will go to, then can start phoning and trying to get it down more. The on line quote may vary to actual end cost due to admin charges etc. Some give extra discount for payment by direct debit perhaps, or if you are willing to accept a higher excess fee this brings the overall policy cost down.

Best to used confused.com and moneysupermarket .com - they've worked well for me - my daughter's second year aged 18 was £460 in a Gp 3 Punto, which I thought was good.
Do the whole thing online, including paying.

So what's insurance like for a 17 year old, first year (obviously)?
|
Not worth bothering with, frankly. We used an any-driver policy with my mum named as the main driver on the car for the first 3 years, the only way it was affordable for my brother and me to share a car. Still about £800 on a Rover Metro 1.5D.

Have you tried Privilege, Directline and the AA? They are usually quite good with younger drivers and I have shopped between the three of them for years.
Also regarding online prices varying - most insurance websites offer a discount for taking insurance online, hence the differences your seeing ( 10% online discount is normal ).
To get the insurance online just read the small print carefully as they make certain assumptions when you do it online although they will make you aware of these first. The AA webiste is great for arranging cover online and the paperwork arrives the next day.

Aprilia - boy or girl? Ins gp? Got £750 odd on daughter #1 about 18 months ago for a Gp 3 Punto via Diamond using Confused.

You get an online discount which is why it tends to be lower online. I suggest Admiral, but if you can't better it with them, then have a look on moneysupermarket.com, as they have a few cheaper people on their search confused.com don't - though beware you have to add things like legal expenses, courtesy car etc all onto what you'd get on a standard policy, but even then they come out cheaper...

try tesco insurance
or buy a corsa and they throw in 3 years insurance for buttons, makes it worthwhile at those prices

Another price comparison site worth a try is www.quotedetective.com. I have found RAC insurance cheap but I think their prices have gone up in the last few months but they are excellent to deal with - they also have UK call centres!

I had good results when i was an 18 year old by buying a copy of max power and ringing through the ads in the classified section at the back, its worth a try.

Try Tesco on-line for quote
My daughter at 17 to the day, was insured with a £500 excess in 1.2 punto, for £870 p/a
This dropped to £580 with one year no claim when she, or rather I, paid for the second year.
This is semi-rural Worcestershire.

Strangely Tesco declined to quote though confused.com when I was looking for yr 2 ins for my daughter.

I stand to be corrected, but some of the sites that claim to search for insurance quotes are paid for by some of the big players in the market and may well not be as comprehensive as all that. I seem to recall that one of the websites that 'helped' find the cheapest electrical supplier was funded by nPower.
My own car insurance is with NFU Mutual, so when I was enquiring about insurance for my daughter I asked for a quote. The local rep who knew well told me the company were not interested in insuring inexperienced drivers and quoted accordingly. He suggested Tesco to me, and in the event were several hundred pounds better than anybody else.

NFU Mutual now keener to insure young drivers as set out on their website. They give a good rate if you agree to a protocol setting out no late night driving with a car full of passengers etc and no driving to and from the pub. These days they insure ordinary mortals as well as farmers.
ecarinsurance and quinn-direct and kwikfit also can give good rates for young drivers. The comparison sites (confused money supermarket etc) are of limited use for young drivers as they do not cover the whole market .
Bell and Elephant are also worth trying.

We've found the car comparison sites are very good at giving you a list of insurers to go to directly. The initial questions are 'one size fits all' and when you go to the cheapest you need to provide more info which invariably puts the price up. On confused my current insurer won't insure me (!), but Churchill provided a quote, even though when I went to them directly they refused.
Best way still is to make a list of insurers and spend a couple of hours on the net going through them.
My wife has just been sorting insurance and did this yesterday. Swinton came out £80 cheaper than anyone confused came up with (£220 as opposed ot £300), so a big saving. The other bonus with Swinton is it's all dealt with by a local office. As soon as we had paid yesterday they called us and we went and picked the paperwork up and also provided them with proof of NCB so no waiting for post.

Had both daughters insured as provisional licences holders with own car at 17 for about £850 each with Direct Line. Mind you, area makes a huge dofference. Due to a prang daughter 2 didn't get any reduction in second year, so still £850ish for TPFT (Wokingham, Berkshire). She is now at uni in Birmingham, so doing the honest thing I called (anonymously) to get a re-quote. Cost went up to over £1500. Guess what - if she has any incidents up there, she is "staying with friends"!! :-)

I use NFU mutual. My buisiness liability insurance and contents insurance are with them also so I get a very good mutual discount.
