Can anyone help??
306 TD saloon. Dull knocking coming from rear, possibly nearside. I've changed the rear suspension mountings and shockers. I've removed the parcel shelf and secured the spare wheel carrier. I've emptied the boot and taken out the jack. I've checked the security of everything, even pulled out the side panels and checked the seat belts. I've checked the exhaust. I'VE CHECKED EVERY BLOODY THING AND ITS STILL THERE!!!!!!!!
Does not seem to be linked to rough surfaces but slight undulations.
Please, please someone help me!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about the rear suspension arm bearings in the axle crosstube?
Are you absolutely sure it is at the rear?

find an airfield or other abandoned bit of tarmac - have someone sit in the boot and listen while you drive.

Would the suspension arm bearings be an MOT failure as it did pass one several months back? Are they a big job? how would I test for wear?
Tried sitting in the back and guess what it didn't do it! It's not the seat thats loose. Will have to try again. Just wondered if it might be a common problem that someone had first hand knowledge of. I would say it ocurs under light load on the axle and not a heavy load eg turning a corner.

Arm bearings should be an MOT failure but often missed.
Grab rear arm really firmly with the car jacked up and twist it all ways, you need to be strong as the torsion bar can pre-load the play so you don't see it.
How many miles I wonder?

At a genuine 52K the bearings *should* be fine, at 75K+ they are more likely. Still a possibility though.

I forget the car, probably an Escort, belonging to my Father had a solid but intermittent clunk on turning corners, coming from the front, but no feel on the steering. It was also very dependent on the speed, radius and previous direction of travel.
After much head scratcing we found the solution. a golf ball had got into the channel between the metal front "spoiler" and front lower panel. Completely invisible from above and below, could only be removed by feel. Every time it rolled from one side to the other was accompanied by a good solid clunk!

I had a Peugeot 309 GTI and the rear trailing arm bearings went.
Absolute Ba****d of a job. I had to botch it in the end, the needle bearings had worn through the rediculously thin outer shell and into the main axle cross tube. I didnt dare ask about the cost of that part from a dealer.
The tube from the trailing arm into the axle tube wears out also, as the needle bearings bear directly onto this tube. It is only a press fit, but the part is quite expensive.
I spoke to a mechanic who recommended simply replacing the whole axle from a scrapper. Unfortunately the GTI had uprated suspension and rear discs. I couldnt find a second hand axle.
Bear in mind you may need to replace brake pipes and handbrake cables if you remove the rear axle.
The main symptoms I had were a dull knocking when driving over bumpy roads. I ignored the problem for a while and probably paid the penalty with the wear going into the main axle.

Last time I had to help someone with this problem they were being quoted £600 to resolve it with a new cross tube assembly.

Any chance that the noise comes from a door against its frame? This used to happen with 205s which had a rubber block at the top of the rear door, meant to bear against the bodywork. Often had 1mm of gap, enough to make a gentle impact when cornering.
