I have a 2004 Ford Focus and am finding that I need to be up really close to the car for the remote central locking to operate via the keyfob. I've had a few Fords before but never had to change the keyfob battery - is it straightforward? Also I am hoping that no re-programming is required. I would have checked if this procedure is in the handbook but I didn't get one when I bought the car.

You will need to reprogram ALL the remote keyfobs but its so easy.
Change the dead keyfob battery & then take a walk out to the car with ALL your remote keyfobs because they all get erased when you go in to programming mode.
Get in car & shut door, stick a key in ignition, doesn't matter which one.
Turn key from OFF to position 2 & back again 4 times in under 6 seconds, then wait for the BEEP.
Once you hear the beep press any button on the first keyfob, wait for another beep.
The if you have any more remote fobs within 10 seconds press a button on the second remote fob, wait for the beep again.
The if that's all the fobs done get out but wait a minute before using a fob so the car has exited programme mode.
Job done

Thanks for the quick reply! Strictly speaking the battery is not yet dead but I assume the re-programming is necessary as all memory will be lost when the old battery is removed. I only have the one remote keyfob and the other one has the blue coloured insert in the corner, this one (I think) is the master key?
Do you happen to know which make/type of battery is required?

If it's the same as the one for my Mondeo, and it almost certainly is, it's a 2032.
The only time I've ever had to reprogramme my remote key fob was when I dismantled it completely so solder back in one of the small switches which had come adrift inside.
I've never had to reprogramme when just changing the battery. Ford say you've got 10 seconds to do it in, but I've never managed to complete it within this time and it's still worked perfectly afterwards.

Hi
No idea on battery type or how many, haven't had one apart ( yet )
Reprograming is only necessary if the key fob doesn't work after the battery change, sometimes you are lucky & get away with it other you aint & have to spend a minute re coding the remote fob.
Your cars DOESN'T have a master key as such, you just need 2 correctly coded PATS keys to code any more to the car yourself ( its as easy as coding the remote fobs )
If you only have one coded PATS key then you need help from a Ford dealer / auto locksmith / electrician with correct software & kit.
The PATS ( Passive Anti Theft System ) bit is separate from the remote fob coding part
The blue spot on the top of the key just means its the later Ford Crypto key system with a longer rolling code, earlier Ford keys had red spots, its just an easy way to identify which key system is in use because the 2 types of key are not interchangeable.
