Hi,
Was driving a P reg 1.8 Mondeo along the motorway ( in the 3rd lane), when all of a sudden the car cut out. I managed to freewheel to the hard shoulder without hitting anything. The car started first time and then I drove off.
Could it have been the fact that because of the fog, I had fog lights and dipped beam on that caused the battery to stop working?
Any thoughts are gratefully appreciated.

No, it can't be the battery, as this isn't used when driving along, a generator/alternator provides the power and charges the battery too. If there was a problem with this and the battery went flat you wouldn't have been able to restart.
It's could be anything really, from an ignition fault to a sensor fault even ignition key barrel problem, you could get a garage to check for fault codes stored in the ECU memory, especially if it happens again.

I happen to be having the same problem at the moment. I also believe it is when I am using the battery (heated rear window, heater etc.) that the problem occurs.
Is it possible that you put the choke in early and were slowing down, which caused insufficient revs to power the battery? That is what seems to be happening in my case. It is when the choke is put in too early and I am hitting the brake and taking my foot off the accelerator to change gear that the engine does not tick over fast enough and it cuts out on me.

franco, Mondeos don't have a choke, they're Fuel injection.
If the engine cut out altogether, without faltering then it's most likely to be an electrical problem. Check connections to cam & crank sensors, ignition coil, battery leads and all earthing points.

Its a long shot, but check that the emergency cut-off for the fuel injection is securely in the 'on' position - there's a label on the back of the driver's sunvisor with details.

Passenger side footwell, left hand side trim in front of the passenger door & under dash / glovebox area is a small hole ( its a bit hidden but it is there ) in the trim, fuel cut off switch is behind there, stick your finger in through the hole to reach / reset it.
