Fuel problem or not ? 1.4 tdi vw polo - alan kearn
Any one with an idea of the cause of these symptoms
I have a 1.4 tdi pd (turbo diesel) Polo I should also emphasis it has 3 cylinders .and this fault appeared. when I was out in the car yesterday, the car suffered a dramatic loss of power in that when I was on on level ground I could not get the engine above 2500 rpm and the engine was jerking slightly as though the fuel was being shut off and on. when I reached an incline in the road I was left wondering if the car was going to manage to reach the top. If I pressed the accelerator further down to try to compensate for the loss of power on the incline I could here a hiss or a sucking of air sound from the engine compartment on the passenger side. As I have pointed out it has 3 cylinders and if one was not doing its share of load this could account for this large drop in power. When the car is not moving I can rev the engine right up to maximum rpm without any delay or hesitation, but this is when the engine is not under load. I have my doubts that it could be the turbo charger but I know could be wrong. To me it sounds as though one cylinder is not getting fuel to it. I am not totally sure but one day last week this same symptom appeared to happen momentarily when floored the accelerator there was a definite flat spot that then vanished as quick as it appeared (I have since done 150 miles) and at the time I though thats strange.

Thanks

Have a very careful look at the air hoses on the tubocharger and intercooler. You may well find one is leaking or adrift - well worth a look before delving too deeply here. Other than the MAF sensor, which generally produces different symptoms, the PD diesels are reliable.

Could it be that you've air getting into the fuel lines ?? Ive recently had a similar problem with my Golf Turbo Diesel. If youve a clear pipe going into the engine from the fuel filter you may beable the air stuck in the lines stopping the diesel getting into the engine.

Just an idea...
