Help!! I have a 4 year old Rover 25 turbo diesel which has done 73,000 miles. Regularly serviced and timing chain done. Suddenly lost power on the motorway and emitted copious amounts of black smoke. Limped it to work and called a well known breakdown service, who came and checked it and said it was fine. Said it could have been the exhaust gas recirculator. But it didn't get any better. Feels like the choke is permanently on. Took it to a local garage who said that the exhaust pipe was crushed and this was causing the problem. But it is still the same.
Petrol {Typo amended - DD} Diesel consumption has increased by 50%. Any ideas??

turbo diesel /Petrol consumption has increased by 50%. Any ideas??
Some connection ?
|
I really tried hard not to post something about that thinking that I'd get groaned at and then two go ahead and do it anyway!!!
|
Ok guys, thanks a bunch. Diesel consumption has dropped dramatically!!!!!!
|
I assume you've had the EGR changed?
|
And don't worry - everytime I make a silly post, ten people who know what they're on about come along and make me look even more stupid!
|
Thanks Adam. It is tough for us ladies when guys in garages are telling us the cars fine, and Iweknow damn well it isn't.
|
|
|
The garage said this wasn't the problem!

Twas but a slip of the tongue guys - our poster simply meant fuel consumption has increased by 50%. Did warn her that people would comment on it btw :)
Now can anyone help solve the problem?? :)
Pretty please :)

Was the crushed exhaust pipe changed? Diesels don't have a choke so it can't be that. Black smoke = excess fuel consumption which what you have reported. What does your Rover dealer say? They are the place to go, or a diesel specialist like your loca Bosch depot
Hard work pays off in the future - Laziness pays off now!
|
I don't think they changed it. They said the clips had crushed the pipe and had straighteneed those out. They explained that it owuld probably smoke for the next 200 miles, but then it would be ok!
|
Although I am no diesel expert, this doesnt sound right to me. Lots of black smoke is too much fuel or not enough air to burn the diesel in the engine.
I would personally take it somewhere else as I cant understand why it will take 200 miles to right itself, there is either the right amount of air and fuel going into the engine or there isnt. A rover specialist may be the way to go if you have one near where you live/work as they will be cheaper than the xpart dealers and probably more competent.

I agree with taking it to a Rover specialist,it needs a diagnostics done on ECU for any problems

Thanks very much guys. I have taken it to a Rover dealer this evening, and will see what they say tomorrow. I have found your comments and advice very useful.
Thanks again
|
Best of luck sorting it out.

I once had a similar fault on an early diesel cavalier which was caused by the air intake hose collapsing at high revs and causing a restriction but when you looked for a fault it obviously wasn`t there ,just as you say it smoked very bad and lost power but after it slowed right down it cleared itself, check it hasnt sucked a plastic bag or other rubbish into the air filter
the smoke remaining could be fuel not properly burned now clearing from the exhaust
good luck

ps the exhaust crushed may have nothing to do with your current problem unless it severely restricts flow

Hi
I am experiencing exact same problems as you did. It has been happening on and off for about 8 months. Had oil and fuel filters changed and been in numerous garages but still can't find the problem......did you get any advise from the Rover dealer? Any advise would be appreciated broke down on the motorway yesterday!!!
|
As has been suggested its probably lack of air, if you are emitting smoke that equates to wasted fuel. Take it to an independant diesel specialist.
|
Sounds like a blocked or collapsed air filter to me.

Dear Rover User,
I am facing the same problem with my Rover 25. How did you manage to restore the power?
Look forward to receive your reply.
