Uninsured Drivers = 99% Hit & Runs - audiaudi
Hi

All lawful motoirst and other decent eople are fed up with the criminals that drive around without valide insurance.

Even if a car has insurance, but subsequently runs out of raod tax/mot, then technically its not insured.

Where there is a weill, there is a way. The way is simple.

Demand that the next government scraps every vehicle that is stopped/caught on the roads of the uk. Plus fine heavily and ban the driver, and repeat offeders, prison as well.

A simple solution. A solution that will deter about 50% of the unisured drivers in my hudgement.

I know ofpeople who know people that drive around in vehicles that are worth several k and if their vehicle was scrapped and them fined and banned, only the very stuipd would continue to repeat offend.

The above should reduce the misery suffered by all lawful people that regularly suffer at the hands of these low lives.

So what is stopping the government from doing what I have suggested?

The awful tangle of existing laws perhaps. Trouble with making new ones is that they don't automatically repeal existing ones that contradict them. They just make everything more complicated. Good for lawyers, bad for everyone else.

The insurance company have agreed to cover you in relation to damage to third parties. They cannot wash their hands of that because your vehicle is unroadworthy, they are still liable to make good any damage or compensate any injury to someone else.

What they probably would do is refuse to to compensate you for any loss or damage to yourself or your vehicle, even if you were fully comp. What they could also do if they wished is to sue you to recover any money they have had to pay out.

Simple, anyone know any quick builders of prisons, alternatively the Government probably thinks there are a few more serious crims that they can use up the last 160 places on.

This is why i mentioned a jail term as a last resort.
Read again my intial post and you will see that my post clealry suggests that the scrapping of vehicles worth several k on the very first infringement will reduce this kind of serious crime by 50%

Re prisons - ifr people break the law, and unisured drivers are always reckless drivers and normally have a criminal background, do desrve a prison sentnece.

How many times have you heard about drivers not being insured and killing and maiming real people???? And causing distress and other injuries and costs to the victims??

If you think that uninsured drivers are not criminals, wait until you become a victim

The trouble is, some people are forgetful, and it would be a bit unfair to crush someone's car just because it was a week past it's mot.

The jails are full this week, according to the papers, so they'd just get a tag anyway.

A week, maybe. Six months on the other hand.

Jail is impractical and too harsh. Ban them and get them on the bus.

Fair point, and I've known genuine people it has happend to. However, if the cars appears to be in a state of un-road worthiness, then scrap it and the rest. If the driver is a known micky taker, throw the book at it.

I nearly forgot once to get the car insured, so it can happen.

What I've done is that everything runs out in the same month - tax, insurance and mot when appropriate - same with building and contents cover.

Yes I know you may have said prison as a last resort, unfortunately if you have a last resort then when that last resort is required you have to exercise it otherwise it is no deterrent at all.

I would suggest, in my experience, that the majority of drivers that drive uninsured do not live in a world where they drive vehicles worth thousands of pounds, more like a couple of hundred pounds.

As for injuries and costs to the victims and waiting until I become a victim I really don't need a lecture from you. I have been involved in six accidents in over 34 years on the roads, none of them my fault, on four occasions the other driver was uninsured, on three occasions my vehicle was a write off, so I have lost serious money and suffered some serious inconvenience. Each of those drivers was in a vehicle that would have struggled to get £25 quid from the scrappie let alone worth thousands. Don't get me wrong I have no sympathy with uninsured drivers but even so I still regard uninsured drivers as lower down the pecking order of people deserving a prison space than the likes of people who walk into a McDonalds and shoot someone or who stabs a guy in the street because he has the temerity to ask them to keep the noise down.

In future please read my posts more carefully and pay more attention to understanding the tone in which they are meant.

On second thoughts don't bother because I shan't bother to post in any thread in which you post.

Cockle

Which part of my post you referring to?
Uninsured Drivers = 99% Hit & Runs - PhilW
Audi,
I would think that Cockle was referring to all of your post which replied to his post about lack of space in prisons.
He made the perfectly valid point that our prisons are full (either 50 or 160 places left according to news today) implying that ininsured drivers might be low down the list of potential occupiers of these last few places.
You over-reacted by answering him with a diatribe about (and I precis here) "if you were/had been a victim you would think otherwise". You seem to enjoy making contentious statements, asking contentious questions to which people make perfectly reasonable answers /suggestions/corrections to which you then over-react , addressing them as if they are stupid and that everything you say is the height of reasoned, informed, logical argument .
As an example, you said
"unisured drivers are always reckless drivers and normally have a criminal background, do desrve a prison sentnece."

Are uninsured drivers always reckless?
Do they "normally" have a criminal background?
Do they deserve a prison sentence because they are uninsured or because YOU think they do?
What does the title of your thread have to do your post? (and does it make sense?)
Do you have any sources that would back up any of your statements?
Even your suggestion that the "government" should scrap these uninsured cars seems odd when the police already have these powers (don't they?)

Anyway I'm joining Cockle "because I shan't bother to post in any thread in which you post."

Somebody I know didn't get a renewal notice and genuinely didn't realise theirs had run out, and their teenage daughter rolled the car off the road. Result, couldn't find an insurance certificate in date, rang them up and they said it was not renewed. Cost £17,000. The Police felt sorry for them and let them off with the £17k loss.
It would have been daft to crush this car, unless a better way of warning people that it has run out is devised, otherwise the punishment doesn't fit the crime.

There will always be exceptional circumstances and this appears to be one. However, the police would have needed to make sure that the daughter was on the orginal insurance and they had no incidents like this before!!!

Up the thread, i agree that people at times cang enuinely forget to tax/insure/mot their cars!!!

Prison, a last resort.....LOL, it's a better resort than some places I've stayed at on holiday. It's got a colour tv in each room, en-suite bathroom, leisure facilities, job training and education facilities, no beer but plenty of other substances. There's no wonder they're so full. I expect there's a waiting list as well. ;-)
Uninsured Drivers = 99% Hit & Runs - corblimeyguvnar
And here we start a diferent thread!
To some, I would totally agree prison is not a threat, to some, prison is less than a minor inconvenience, more a chance to meet with old pals, learn new skills, take some time out with decent accomodation and 3 square meals a day. Unfortunatley these 'some' are the same that will drive with no insurance, in scrapper cars and will do this regularly, from now til the day they die, unless someone can come up with a blinkin good way of stopping em.

Just a warning to anyone who thinks that a prison sentence is the answer to all of lifes problematic types.
Prison rarely works for the type that 'should be in prison'.

If we go along the line of imprisoning all such motoring offenders as suggested at the start of the thread we risk destroying the lives of the forgetful, unlucky or just dam stupid of us Joe Public.

Prison doesn't work. Plenty of evidence. All it does is protect soceity for the length of the stretch, re-habilitation is nonesense in most cases, in fact plenty of evidence shows that most are worse when they come out.

Absolutely right Pug. But the reason they don't work is that in most cases they would be better described as Gentlemens Country clubs.
I can speak with experience having worked in them for 32 years.
And rehabilitation is nonsense as you rightly state. But there are so many people employed in this business enjoying endless discussion groups on each of these towrags, and fussing round them and describing to them how they are victims of society that you would be lynched if you said that to the welfare dept.

We are told that we have, by far, the highest prison population in Europe. Is this because in the UK, we have criminality in our genes, or is it down to the 10,000 crims we've imported?
