I can feel a Chrysler 300 CRD coming on...or a used 530D Touring. Anything but a Volvo please!

I think I'd be looking for a MB E class estate - absolutely huge loadspace. Take a look at the MB Direct websites; you should get one of the ex MB UK cars under a year old for that sort of money - aim for an E280 CDI or E320CDI for decent performance. Alternatives are the current 5 series estate or A6; in my experience though the MB has a far larger load space than the BMW, though the BMW does feel far smaller to drive

Just my thoughts

The E series MBs are not the car they once were, sadly. MB has thrown away the best name for solidity in the business and bulit cars to a price. It shows.

Audi?

Drove a new Ford Galaxy tonight and am left very impressed by it. It felt no larger than my mondeo estate to drive and park. The one I drove is a low spec version but was fine inside. I would change to one in a flash, if I was wealthy enough!

If reliability is a concern then be wary of Chrysler. I don't know what the very latest ones are like, but their previous efforts have not been well built (they have the poorest electrical design of any modern car I've looked at). Parts are dear from the dealers and supply for anything older than 5 years is problematic.

Despite recent quality wobbles an MB is probably the best all-round bet. If you don't mind spending less than £29k then one of the Subarus (Forester or Outlander) would be a good buy.

Merc 320 cdi

300c - probably easiest to find for the money.

Assuming that brand isn't an issue, as the OP hasn't mentioned prestige or image as a requirement, I'd have a long hard look at a diesel Skoda Octavia in Elegance trim with the DSG auto gearbox. Comfy, economical, well built, good dealers, and I'd expect to get it new for 1/3 under budget, too.

Take a look at Audi A6 2.7 avant - might get ex-demo for this money - fine car , great engine

Subaru Legacy and pocket the change.

If it must be diesel, it's not going to be a Subaru, unless you are a patient man.

Depends on your priorities.

If outright power, then the Chrysler.

If reliability, then the Toyata Avensis with the D-4D 180 engine.

About £22k OTR so £7k to spend on a motorbike!

Having driven a T180 I would also suggest a year old Mondeo as proposed above, a top spec 2.2 diesel, more low down torque than the T180 and cruicially a bigger boot, all for around £14 to 15k with less than 10k miles.

I've got a 300C with 13500 miles on it & so far (touch wood) it's as perfect as the day that i got it.

I speak to a few 300C Touring drivers, and they are firmly in the happy bunny camp as well.

£29k sounds like a company limit, and if so it's only human nature to want to spend up to it.

I'd say your choice is:

Mercedes E-class or Volvo V70 for capacity
BMW 5-series for driveability
Audi A6 as the best compromise and the one I'd go for

Chrysler 300C Touring - you'll either love or loathe the looks but go and try one.

If mpg is important you could have fun speccing up a Honda Accord 2.2 diesel Tourer. Personally I'd want a 6-cylinder diesel: my current Mercedes B200 CDI isn't a patch on the previous A4 2.5 TDI.

If mpg is important, the Accord isn't for you. Low 40s is the norm, although some are lucky and get a more efficient one.

If driveability, power, handling and refinement are important, then it's a great choice, although the levels of road noise are very dependant on surface and can be fairly high.

A nice Mondeo estate of some description, a 7, a TR6, an elderly Landrover and an MX 'bike. The rest of the money should be invested in wine and women/men/sex objects of your choice.

Sold the Golf then, Ken? Come into a bit of cash?
Estate car Best for £29k - KenC
Still Got the Golf, a freind of mines come into loads of money ( and I mean LOADS) he asked me to post the estate question- he wants a good workhorse..
He,s also looking to buy a new Bently or Aston Martin, If I,m lucky might get a drive !.
Estate car Best for £29k - legacylad
Sorry to impose, but if your friend has few financial restraints, why a diesel?

If he wants reliability, a Subaru should at least be considered

If he wants a 'workhorse' a Legacy Tourer should be considered

If he wants value for money and an enjoyable driving experience, a Spec B (with a years depreciation) should be considered.

IF your friend chooses the latter, please contact me in four years time when I might just be able to afford it!!!
Estate car Best for £29k - nick
I've never driven a Spec B tourer but the saloon is one hell of a car. Cheap as chips for what they are.
