My wife is putting her A6 on eBay soon. 98 R reg, 1.8T, 145000 miles. FSH, mainly Audi but 2 more recent specialist services. Interior excellent, 7 months MOT, recent decent tyres all round. Has the smaller size alloys which were reconned about 2 yrs ago and now starting to look slightly tatty. A few stone chips and a couple of scrapes to the bumper. Small area of rust re-appearing by front wheel arch base, probably from previous bad repair ( 10p sized, we had it fixed before for about £150) Small ding with small paint crack on rear. ABS and hand brake warning lights come on for a second or two sometimes. Silver with air-con and electric sunroof. Anyone care to guess what it might fetch?

First thought and a glance on the Trader seems to confirm it as reasonable is an asking price of £2,700 in excellent condition with no faults that you wouldn't consider wear and tear, i.e., T-cut the scrapes on the bumper and any rust would be wholly unexpected on an Audi of this age.

The Whatcar valuations presumably are for a motor in decent nick, personally I wouldn't fancy paying more than a bag for a leggy, tatty A6. If it was an estate it would be vaguely attractive as a load lugger but a saloon has little in the way of being attractive.

Just another thought with regards the ABS and handbrake light coming on - both are potential hefty bills and there is a fair chance that other work will be required in the not too distant future, all of which mean you could quite conceivably spend a sum equal to the purchase price keeping it on the road safe and legal.
Yet another reason to knock the value down further.

We were expecting\hoping for about £1000. We've had it 2 years and paid about £2600 at auction so that seems that it might be about right. The rust is a mystery-it had a mark on the paintwork when bought as if it had been scraped which soon developed into a bubbly patch which we had fixed but has now started to return, possibly a bad repair originally. The scrapes wont't T-cut out either, we've tried. Overall the car looks OK and rides and runs very nicely but we're certainly not over-optomistic about the price.

I would say that ebay is your best bet - there is often strong bidding on things like this.
Give the car a thorough clean and valet (maybe even pay for a pro job) then take lots of good quality photos, write a detailed but honest description then list the car on a thursday night and let it run for the full 10 days. This way you get maximum exposure, plenty of time for people to view the car and it ends on a night when most people are in.

Just as an end (assuming buyer turns up tomorrow as promised, with cash) to the above story, it fetched bang on £2000. We were quite pleased.

Not seen this thread before but I had your car in my EBay watch! Possibly a month or so off changing and wanting to get a feel for A6 prices. I thought you did OK.
So was your ownership experience positive?

Thanks for coming back with an outcome. It is always interesting to read the results of intentions and problems but unfortunately very few bother.
Really appreciated.

The A6 experience has been a pretty pleasant one and not hugely costly. ( it was bought as an ex-company car 2.5 years ago for about 3600, including auction fees)There have been unexpected expenses ( suspension and drive-shaft ) and it needs money spending to bring it up to scratch, but it's by no means a banger. It's still tight and solid and a nice car to drive. We already have a Saab 9-5 so decided to down-size one of the cars and the Audi, though older and with much higher mileage, was worth more than the Saab and thus raised a larger deposit towards the most economical and cheap-to-run small car. Current fave is Toyota Aygo 5dr. with 3 years free servicing and a years free insurance, ins. group 1 and big MPG. Basically the cheapest car to run bar none, according to What Car. A sort of latter-day 2CV with modern style and Japanese reliability and residuals. As recommended by Honest John.

Buyers turned up at 8 this morning, having left Leeds at 3.30am! Very pleased with car , took them to the bank and paid the cash in, and they've left with the car and very happy.

Mr Woody,
Forgetting the fact you don't need such a big car again, and forgetting fuel consumption, would you buy one again?
