2001 VW Passat TDi cambelt kit and tool - s lyle
Ladies and Gents,
Can you please recommend me where I can purchase a timing belt kit ( VW Part No. 038198119) for my diesel Passat ( local VW Dealer has quoted me £148-56 for the kit, which seems a bit excessive ) and where I can get my hands on the locking tools required for the belt change ?
My Haynes manual specifies VW locking tools T10050 and T10008. I have tried my local VW Dealer and they will not sell me the tools.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Cambelt kit GSF (German Swedish & French).

Locking tools - Draper do the crank locking tool T10050 for about £8. Google will find. A 6mm drill shank will lock the camshaft.

Go carefully with this engine.

This engine has probably the most highly stressed camshaft drive in the business due to the enormous forces required to operate the unit injectors. In order to make it work at all, there are a few dubious details, such as a camwheel damper and selectively wider tooth spacing on the crank wheel to reduce single tooth loading as an injector "fires".

Due to the stresses involved, there is just no margin for sub standard parts, incorrectly torqued or re-used fixings or any other form of bad workmanship.

Wow, that's us told and with some details as to why. Thanks for that. I don't drive a PDi car but I know a few who do. Will check they've changed cambelts accordingly. We all know VW changed the intervals.
