Bosch or Lucas fuel pump?

Bad luck. Check the priming bulb for defective valves - watch it as the engine is started and make sure it doesn't collapse. Then check all 'O' rings in the fuel filter for correct seating and pipework for leaks. Leaking injector spill pipes are not so critical with the Lucas pump, but don't help. Check also the rubber blank on No 4 injector (Peugeot cylinder numbering).
Finally, there is a fuel pre-filter (strainer) in the tank. Look under the back seat and remove the fuel gauge tank unit - the filter is inside.

tks, done most of this-but not all,pls keep yr eye on my reply,i do thank you for advice.have you heard of this problem before?? Its so feels electrical,it made sense to be the stop solenoid, but i know its not that.finally,i can remeber car used to struggle after about 30 miles, aas thjough fuel starvation,as soon as i slowed down-it was not so bad, maybe fuel tank is issue,i had just filled them thing to the brim when it went. best regards PK

Check that the fuel tank vent is clear as well as the strainer - if in doubt about venting, try starting with fuel cap off.

One other thought - sometimes the rubber tip on the stop solenoid plunger becomes gungy on the Lucas pumps. Remove stop solenoid (clean carefully around it first) then take out the plunger entirely and replace solenoid. The engine should run properly, without the electrical stop facility. Spare solenoids are readily available from diesel specialists.

thanks guys, tried each every one of yr thoughts-no damn difference, what to do now-replace engine/??

One more thing. Put a voltmeter on the glowplug supply cable, at the plugs. Pre-heat is obviously working, as the engine starts OK but you might just be losing the post-heat due to a faulty controller or thermistor. These engines can post-heat for up to 5 minutes in cold weather; a cold start at this time of the year should give you about 3 minutes post-heat. Loose connections under the glow plug controller unit are not unknown here - PSA use nylock nuts, but the controller runs so hot that the nylon melts out.
If the engine is idling, you can always hear the engine note change when post-heat finishes as the load comes off the alternator and the governor readjusts the fuelling to maintain the idle speed.
