Over potholes or badly patched surfaces (both abundant round here) my Corolla (Aug 2005, 8000 miles) has developed a rattle which seems to be under the dash, but it is difficult to tell at which side.
I removed the glovebox and checked all accessible bits but all seemed securely fixed.
Has anyone experience of this problem and how long is it likely to take my dealer to fix it?

a toyota with a rattle?????
its not the fixing its the finding so you cant give a time, personally i would rather the dealer stuffed newspaper up the back than took the dashboard out if it was mine as they are built in such a way these days that it is nigh on impossible to achieve a factory after finish and it could well rattle worser

Thanks for your advice, oldman, I have been putting off taking it in as I wondered myself how effective a fix would be. I'll maybe try and ignore it unless it gets worse.

Turn the radio up a bit louder?

My 02 Honda Civic has a few rattles, one on top of the dash..However, if it is safe to do so when driving slowly and in zero traffic try to touch bits of the dash with your hand to see if the rattle stops, this can sometimes pinpoint the area. If this fails, it might mean that the rattle is behind the dash (pedals, heater etc) and not part of the plastic dash moulding.
If all fails sometimes going to a softer tyre or running the tyre at the bottom end of the advised pressure range can help. I guess most Cars may rattle slightly over very rough surfaces especially with increased age.
Check out the JD power surveys - Corollas and Civics are only rated just above average for squeaks and rattles.
Some dealers may help you if you car is under warranty, if not under warranty, it is usually too expensive unless it is driving you mad.

In my experience rattles in new'ish cars can often "wear themselves in" and disappear. Give it a few more thousand miles before having the dash out!

I had this problem in a 96 Corolla and there were two causes.
1) The radio wiring harness was loose and vibrating about, cured by removing radio and tying up the loose wires.
2) It was coins in the coin tray rattling!
Both the above were present at the same time.

In the light of your comments I think my best plan is to leave it till its next scheduled service and mention it then if the rattle is still there. (It sounds like metal to metal or very hard plastic, I did wonder if the passenger side airbag canister could move about enough to cause it?).
Thanks to all for your helpful advice.

SWMBO's 53 plate Corolla T3 had loads of rattles from the dash and the back / tailgate area.
I have returned it 4 times and the car is full of the fibre padding strips they put between joints etc.
The radio area of the dash continues to rattle.
I have given up on it.
Besides she ferrys the kids around in it and they mask any rattles.
HJ has reproted rattles in the Avensis he tested long term and if you look at the CBCB on the Lexus models - they also suffer from it.
Sorry I was not much help - though I do think it would be worth the dealer having a look - they did manage to fix SOME of the rattles we had.
