I have a 2000, w reg, 306 hdi. Recently it has had an intermittent starting problem. Sometimes it started straight up and sometimes it took a couple of goes. Then last week it finally gave up and would not start at all! My local independant man came and took it away, he has changed a relay but that did nothing. He has now gone on 2 wks hols so has brought it back, it will start now but i have a battery on the floor with 2 leads direct onto the fuel pump, to connect when i need to move the car.there is no feed from the ignition to the fuel pump, neither the mechanic or myself have a wiring diagram. Has anyone had a similar problem? Can i fix it myself or do i need an auto electrician?

So it starts when the fuel pump is powered up.

Sounds like an immobiliser issue.

You tried sticking a new transponder aerial on the car?

Anyone who hasn't had years of experience on these systems will inevitably struggle to cope with any fault on them. [Those that have had years of experience are now either completely insane or looking hard for ANY other job. When you repeatedly find yourself in no-win situations; quitting is the logical move.]

There are many different set-ups; [all on the same engine code!] but if yours has an inertia switch, check that it's fully down and then check that the terminals of the [brown?] combination relay aren't melted; [was that the relay that was changed?] When testing for a feed to the pump; always start at the pump fuse [they sometimes blow as the tank pumps start to seize-up] and only test when the engine is cranking.

Testing the feeds and outputs of the combination relay is one of the easier bits on a HDi. Do you have a suitable test-lamp?

where is the inertia switch located? in fact where are the relays located? does the brown "combination relay" do anything else? cos it all seems ok. yes i do have a test lamp. the pump sounds healthy when i power it up, no nasty noises. if it was an immobiliser problem doesnt that stop the starter motor?

If you need to ask questions like those; you need a sparks or a diesel specialist. Don't try anything further on your own - one mistake on these and it'll write the car off.

No Peugeot immobiliser since the early 405 / 605 system stops the starter motor from cranking when armed.

It will happily spin over all day non starting untill either the battery goes flat or you burn the starter motor out.

thanks for the replies chaps. i have tried the inertia switch and it seemed ok, also found the relay, it is under the inertia switch, behind the ecu, i have not removed it or been able to test it but when the ignition is turned on it clicks a few times so i assume it controls other things as well. i have the factory supplied "master" ignition key would this work if i have an immobiliser problem?

forgot to mention, when cranking it over it does run for about 10 secs then stops, if it was an immobiliser problem would it do this?

i took the car to my local sparky and he said it would be the combination relay cos they get full of water (from where). he was right and had the job done in an hour, BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
