Diesel Oil additives - Harry j

I have just aquired a Ford Escort 1.8 Diesel (non turbo) and would like to know what additives I can add to the oil (ie) Slick 50 or magnatec , on its next oil change, to help protect the engine from premeture wear etc.

Do these additives really work, or are they a ploy for spending your hard earned cash ??
Re: Diesel Oil additives - Tom Shaw
This query has come up before, and the opinion of those in the know was to save your cash and stick to a good quality oil. I beleive that some of the company's who make additives in the US are the subject of lawsuits which claim that not only do their products not work, but they have an adverse effect on engine life.

The only thing I do to any vehicle I own is treat the engine with FX-1 or ZX-1. It is not a Slick 50 type PTFE treatment but actually conditions the surface of the metal. I have personal experience as to its' worth as it saved the destruction of a full-race Chevrolet V8 doing upwards of 7 laps of the Grand Prix circuit at Silverstone with NO oil pressure and less than 1/2 litre of oil left in the dry-sump tank at the end of the race.

So an additive may be worthwhile if you are running a highly-modified and oil-burning engine in an endurance race in which you might lose all oil pressure?

I totally agree, Andrew!
Re: Diesel Oil additives - Pete
HJ has mentioned Miller's Diesel Plus and there has been mention on the forum that a double dose of something like this, plus a 10 mile high rpm trip to an MOT, may be a good way of getting a diesel thru the emission test. I just did this with a 100,000 mile Rover and it passed, but it might have done anyway!
Re: Diesel Oil additives - Pete
Too early to read properly. Fuel additives Yes but not relevant, oil additives I don't bother - SORRY!
Re: Diesel Oil additives - Pat
Can anyone tell me what's different about diesel engine oil as ccompared to petrol engine oil? I've often wondered, and as I own one petrol and one diesel I have toyed with using one oil. Can I do this?

Yes, a ploy to separate you from yourmoney,go to your ford dealer and buy the recommended oil,Probably Formula "E" but it depends on the age of the car.
Re: Diesel Oil additives - Keithb
Save your money. Castrol Magnatec Diesel or similar will be fine for your Escort. Millers diesel fuel additive is often mentioned on this group but there is no hard evidence that it does any good (such evidence doesn't exist, of course). My worry would be that it does harm. Who are Millers? Presumably a relatively small co. who would not have the development, research and testing budget of a company such as Castrol, BP etc. If these additives were any good, surely the major oil companies would market their own products and we would all use them. Most car manufacturers advise against using any additives.

Re: Diesel Oil additives - Pete
HJ mentions Millers Fuel additive in his column from time to time. I don't think he would mention anything with a neutral or bad effect on ones car! It is particularly useful for clearing out a diesel engine before emissions check on an MOT.. Fails are frequently given a double dose of Millers and a thrash up the nearest dual carriageway and pass with an hour, on re-test.
