If my memory serves me these have a cartridge filter which will be clipped to the underside of a little plastic dome which you unscrew.
|
they gave me a round screw type in the motor factors today so now iam confused lol

If you weren't already aware, you'll need a T45 sized torx bit to undo the sump plug bolt.

i have got the tools and oil, i just cant find the oil filter. thanks anyway mate

You have the wrong oil filter if they gave you a screw on one. The 1.7td engine uses a screw on type.

Hi,
If you have 1997-year 2 litre diesel, check which engine you have, as there were two that year, the DTL (low-power turbo) and the DTH (high-power tirbo), Both use paper-element filters. If you compare the two side-by-side, the DTL filter is taller & thinner; whereas the DTH filter is shorter & fatter.
Beware beacuse my local motor factor's parts catalogue has the two listed the wrong way round. I usually get him to bring both to the counter and pick the right one.
I have a DTL engine Vectra, so the instructions below are for that. If you remove the plastic engine cover, the oil filter is in front of the engine facing the radiator. It's a metal cannister with a black plastic top with a hex nut moulded on to the top. I had to buy a suitable hex socket the first time I changed the oil myself - a wothwhile investment, same goes for the Torx driver for the sump plug. You'll need to change the two washers on the plastic top - but they come with the filter.
I recommend going to the local Vauxhall dealer & buying a new sump plug (they are prone to thread wear & stripping, but it's quite cheap) as you will eventually need to replace it. You then take it to somewhere (e.g. Halfords) to buy the correct Torx driver. Might also be worthwhile getting some rubber washers for the sump plug too - again ask the Vauxhall dealer.
It's a very easy oil change, the most fiddly bit is the changing the rubber rings on the filter top.
Good luck!

No probs, Trev, you're welcome.
My Vectra is 9 years old and covered 195,000 miles, still runs well, and been very reliable. I have recently bought a newer car for daily use, and my daughter is now driving the Vectra to work every day. I expect it to pass 200,000 soon and drive on into the sunset!
Let us know how you get on!
