I've bought a V plate Mazda323 1.5 petrol recently and when driving in 4th or 5th gear, car seems to pull back a bit and you can feel it. I've changed oil/oil filter last weekend but it hasn't made any difference. What other things should I look at. Could it be a faulty spark plug or something? Thanks

Air filter?
|
Much more likely to be electrical.
|
No I haven't changed air filter. I did buy one from Mazda but didn't replace it because the old one looks quite new. Shall I replace it?
What could be the electrical fault? Mazdas are supposed to be well built cars and its done only 38k so far.
|
It may only have done 38k. but it's a 6yr. old.Plugs,leads,etc.The filter will have no effect.

I was thinking of buying new spark plugs from Mazda on coming Saturday to see if it sorts out the problem and while I'll be there I'll see if I could speak to one of their mechanics. It'll also tell me how helpful they are.

36k in 7 years? Sounds like it wants a good Italian Tune up to me, along with a dose of decent petrol.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

To be honest I filled up the tank with "BP Ultimate petrol" and I thought that'll might fix the problem. But I've never driven it hard and my wife drives it more often than I do. Does it mean I should take it on motorway and drive it hard for good 15/20 minutes or something? Thanks guys.

Yes! That's right;also known as an Essex tune-up-get round the M25 in under an hour.
|
Probably a stupid question , but what does 'pulls back' mean.
Sounds like playing with a dog when you tug its rubber ring. Or my colleagues when they see me stomping into the office in bike leathers.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

Glaikit Wee Scunner {P}, while I'm driving the car in 4th or 5th gear it just seems to cut out for a second or two. Its really hard to explain exactly what happens but it just doesn't pickup the the speed smoothly!

My Passat 1.8t did this when the MAF sensor was playing up. It was quite subtle but felt as though the engine lost power very briefly while cruising at about 80mph - it gradually got worse and the engine wouldn't rev past 4500rpm in a ny gear. Not sure if the Mazda has such a sensor but I guess so. I diagnosed the MAF problem by disconnecting it (on the airfilter housing) - the car didn't want to idle anymore but apart from that drove like a dream again.

My T reg 323 used to hesitate a bit, and still does occasionally. It is also a relatively low mileage car. Getting it well warmed up then giving it a good rev - through the gears then holding 5,000 rpm for a mile or so in third gear sorts out. I think it is caused by lots of short local journeys (and low mileage on a relatively old car might be a sign that it has done lots of those).

I once had a Mazda 626 that ran fine, but seemed to lack power on the motorway. In the end, it turned out that the air intake was fed from a piece of tube buried in one wing, behind the headlight. A piece of the foam that stopped it rattling had become dislodged, and was stuck in the intake hole. This was restricting the intake air, and thus the power.
