Hello Everyone
Iam just interested in how many mpg or Litres per KM you are getting from both petrol and diesel cars.
Even the total mileage per tank is ok for people who are not very good at maths like me
For example
My wife in her 1.4 2005 Fiesta style gets around 370 miles per tank (Petrol)
My Mondeo gets me about 460 miles per tank mainly motorway (petrol)

Pug 306 HDi - High 40's/50mpg - 650 miles to 55(?) litres.
Africa Twin 750 - 50mpg - 200 miles to 18 litres.
Both do the same journeys, the bike gets more stick. Be rude not too. ;o)
|
My Focus 1.8 gets about 230 miles per tank. Average mpg about 27, currently about 23 - lots of stop start town work with the aircon on!
|
Citroen Berlingo Multispace 1.6 petrol - about 38 mpg
Ford Ka 1.3 duratec petrol - about 48 mpg
|
Depends what diesel. Bog standard supermarket diesel gives me 48MPG and 500 miles to the tank. BP Ultimate gives me 55MPG and 540+ miles to the tank.
1.9TD XUD in a Citroen Xsara.
|
VW Golf 2.0 TDI DSG - 48+mpg - 625+ miles per tank - ordinary BP diesel - rural environment
|
|
WOW!! I've never done this comparrison, but I assume that although the BP U ltimate will be more costly, per litre, does it actually work out more cost effective. Why is there such a dramatic difference., what do BP do
My 2.2 dci Espace, about 550miles to a tank (approx 65 litres), so approx 40mpg - does that sound good?? It's a fair mixture or A3 and town driving
|
Got my best ever at the weekend - 39.3mpg from a 3 litre V6 (Lodz - Warsaw). That?s about 40 mile country lane, 50 mile dual carriageway, 10 mile city. It was in the early 40s till I started hitting every red light in Warsaw. Usually do it at 36mpg but that?s with aircon and kids in the car.
Regular round town is a not so good 23mpg.
|
My Seat Leon 1.9TDI gives a very consistant 42-43mpg on a variety of supermarket and top brand diesel, which ever I'm closest to at fill up time.
The very optomistic on board computer says I'm averageing around 46mpg though.
|
I get 46 from my Fabia vRS average, but on a longer journey it goes up into the 50s.
Last week on a VERY quick late night run from Leeds to Cheshire (after The Who concert at Harewood House if anyone else was unfortunate enough to be stuck there as long as me!!!) taking about 1 hour 10 minutes it still averaged 44 according to the trip, probably 41-42 more realistically. It's about 86 miles door to door BTW.

Audi A4 Avant TDI 130 - motorway cruising 48-51 mpg average mpg over 3000 miles 48.5 mpg. Regular Shell (where possible) diesel.

26-28mpg 2002 Volvo S60 T5 (Mainly Motorway)

I did a long steady run up the A1 yesterday in a 1.6hdi 307, one up. I did 210 miles in 195 minutes, never went over 75 mph and showed a recorded 57.7 mpg.

|
2004 Vectra 1.9 CDTI: typical about 50-52 mpg, managed 666.1 miles out of a tank when I filled up yesterday (61 litre tank). I was pushing my luck the end though, only 2 litres from being genuinely empty!! :)
|
My 2 litre petrol Omega has managed 39.5 mpg average this tax year, 7500 miles so far. Drops to 28-30 mpg if just used for short runs.
SWMBO's 1.8 Zafira does around 32 mpg on the short runs rising to 41 mpg on a good run e.g. Christchurch - Lyme Regis 5 up.

My MB E320CDi estate does 38-40 mpg (I reset the second computer thingy on the 1st of each month) but I think that it is about 5% optimistic.
SWMBO's 1.3 auto Yaris does 35mpg around the shops and 50 ish on a run.

Citroen Picasso 2.0 HDi
Last 2 brim to brims on Asda fuel- 50mpg
BP Ultimate 47.9 (Can't remember doing many extra short trips in it).
About 90% motorway/ dual carriageway at 75 mph.

No idea about my wifes Fiesta 1.3 petrol. She doesnt check it- and only puts £5 in at a time so can't do brim to brims.

Yes, I must admit most of the LC's journeys are motoway hauls at around 65mph (70 on speedo) nice and relaxed. Most owners of the 3.0TD auto version don't seem to get much more than 26mpg so I'm quite happy with 22!

Approx 4.54 litres to 1 gallon.
Therefore....
60 litres divided by 4.54 = 13.22 gallons
600 miles divided by 13.22 gallons = 45.4 mpg.

"Pug 306 HDi - High 40's/50mpg"
Wow, mss1tw, you must push along a bit. After getting my HDI engine timing set properly, I can just about manage a true 60mpg on long trips. This is by cruising at 55-65 and not flooring it unless I have to. By the way, my odometer distances read 1.4% high, so you may need to knock off about 1mpg to get a true figure. I have my own idiosyncratic way to monitor it - I always get 22 litres of diesel, which will go 300 miles in ideal conditions. If it is much less, I ask why.
For comparison, I got just on 50mpg from a 96N Punto 1.2 driven the same way.

2000W Golf MkIV Estate TDI 90, 95000 miles.
About
46-47 mpg on long mainly motorway runs at around 78mph (best around 50)
52 mpg on commuting runs of 18-30 miles (best around 57-58)
45 around London if no long traffic jams
48 mpg o/a but it seems to be dropping (could be the winter effect!)
Is this typical for this model and mileage?
Thx in advance as I am trying to judge if I am getting to the stage of worn injectors!

1993 Polo 1.0 4-speed:
Overall average for 2700 miles is 48mpg
But the 2 fully laden journeys over the N. Yorkshire moors bring it down (the 2 runs only gave 40 and 44 mpg, the lowest ever)
But I have seen 57 mpg twice :-O

I have a Ford Ka Y-reg with the endura-e engine, it does not have air conditioning, i get the following results brim-to-brim using shell optimax:
Mainly town driving (approximately) 45-47 mpg, about 310-320 miles to the tank (40 liters)
On a long motorway journey (approx): 52-54 mpg about 340-350 miles to the tank
On a journey which consisted of just driving on the A40 to Wales 56mpg 370 miles to the tank possibly further if i stretch it to the brim.

My Nissan Almera 1.8 automatic usually ends up averaging over 1000 miles out at something very close to the advertised 36.2mpg overall consumption. It dips a bit around town to 32-34, remains about 36 on a fast mway journey with air conditioning, or tops 40 if I'm doing B-roads at 50mph without aircon.
If I am really pushing on, and do a lot of fast acceleration for overtaking etc, kickdown seems to devastate the fuel economy.
All those figures are based on the onboard computer, 'cos I couldn't be bothered calculating it myself.

Barchetta: round town+short runs 11litres/100km (ouch)
fast motorway runs 8-8.5 litres/100km
Don´t know what that is in MPG, apart from ´disappointing´. But blasting round the Black Forest the last few days with the top of has made up for it.

"45-47 mpg, about 310-320 miles to the tank (40 liters)"
Something inconsistent in these figures, frazer. As 1 gallon = 4.546 litres, this is about 10 mpl, which would make your tank about 32 litres. Pretty small for a normal car I would say. Perhaps you just can't suck out the last gallon?
|
Hey Andrew T, my ford Ka has 40 liter tank, i fill up brill-to-brim 7& the pump clicks when filled about around the 33 litre mark.
Maybe it is me doing my sums a bit wrong!! :-/

Last week I got over 58 mpg from my 2003 Rover 45 TD 115 with a mixture of motorway and rural driving. I usually average low 50s mpg during a normal working week with approx 600 miles from 12 gal tank. On a recent holiday to the Lake District I did 921 miles over a week and averaged just over 52 MPG. The hills up there did for the MPG somewhat.

Figures taken from the trip computer just minutes back!
Over the last 1031 miles

Now I realise this is not a typical average, but most of my trips are between 11pm and 1am and on country/A roads constant speed no traffic at all!
Can back this up with photos if anyone wants to see them!
Infact since Im a bit anal at times I have actually taken them now ! and have them with me for anyone who would like to see them!

My Skoda Superb 100PD usually averages 52mpg(long commute+roundtown), drops to 48.5 at 130kph (ish) when touring Europe. I once got an indicated 74 mpg on a 10 mile country lane journey. Not bad for a car nearly 5M long.
My Skoda Octavia 1.4 used to average 46mpg (same long commute+roundtown) dropping to 43.5 at 130mph. This has now dropped to about 36mpg (school run, shops etc..)

Hyundai Accent 1.3i, between 38 (town) and 43mpg (long-distance, 80mph average on motorways). On one occasion I dawdled along on the motorway at 60 for a couple of hundred miles (overnight when the roads were dead, and I was in no rush) and I think it was managing about 47-48 or so.

JohnX,
Very jealous. My 2002 model Passat PD 100 estate does 44mpg overall and has done so for the 86000 miles since new.
Motorway speed, indicated 80, 75 true, will get 42mpg on long trips. Even worse with push bikes on back.
Got to be on a gentle downhill slope before meter indicates anything over 50mpg steadily.
Home to work 40-42mpg and work to home 50--54mpg indicated over 24 miles. A couple of long downhills on way home boost mileage figures.

Here we go then:
2001 Toyota Celica 1.8 VVT-i got 37mpg, always. Regardless of a/c it seems.
2005 Mondeo TDCI 130 (6-speed) hatch gets 45mpg, with climate on. Computer optimistically believes this is 50mpg. Bless.
2001 Ford Focus 1.6 LX hatch gets 36mpg. This drops to 34 with a/c on. Less economical than a sports car. I find this amusing.
2005 Nissan Almera 1.5 S, Dad's 5dr gets 44mpg, or 40 with the a/c on.
So as we can see, the Ford Focus, despite it's modest size, performance, weight and such is ridiculously expensive to fuel. Anybody know why?
|
Renault Laguna II 5 door 1.8 16v petrol.
Averages 33mpg 400 miles per tank normal driving round lanes to work etc a/c on.
On a run does 36-38mpg.
I don't drive for economy, dad had a similar car and got 5 - 8 mpg better than me but drives in a totally joyless way with the a/c off.
Not great economy compared to a diesel but the equivalent car with the Dci engine would have cost £1000 more, thats a third of what I paid for the petrol model.
|
Ford Mondeo mk2 1.8 TD used for daily commute on M3/M25 in rush hour and general family type running about at weekends. Not driven consciously hard or gently and air-con used whenever it's warm outside. Getting around 570 miles to the fuel light where it then takes between 55 and 57 litres to re-brim the tank. Works out at around 45-46 mpg.
Ford Fiesta 1.4 Zetec (mk4) commutes 3 days a week and then a lot of A to B running about other times. Tends to get driven a bit harder than the Mondeo - combination of a sweet, revvy engine and a keen chassis. Does around 300 miles before the gauge hits the bottom, and takes about 33 litres to re-brim the tank. Works out at about 41 mpg.

Berlingo 1.6 HDi (only 2000 miles so far) overall 45 mpg. Trip to France (with 4 up plus luggage and beer and wine ! )mixture of autoroute at 80 mph and rural N and D routes, 52 mpg. Driving at home mixture of 5 mile up hill down dale commute and weekend blasts on motorway.
These are brim to brim measurements - computer is about 2mpg optimistic.
What i do notice is that I can average in the very high 50s if I drive at a steady 65 on the motorway, but this drops to 46ish at 80 mph - presume this is due to (brick like!) aerodynamics. Hope it improves further as engine gets "run in".
--
Phil
|
> presume this is due to (brick like!) aerodynamics
It wont improve.
The Touran has the aerodynamics of a brick. example
46mpg in town, never drops below 44mpg.
52-55mpg at 65 mph
48 mpg at 70
44 mpg at 75
40 mpg at 80
it seems that every 1 MPH above 65mph will cost me 1mpg consumption. Passats and golfs dont show quite this brick like drop in consumption at speed with the same engines. The effects of wind is amazing. I drive a 150mph route one way at an average of 65mph and get an indicated 55mpg. I drive the exact same route back at the same average speed and its 49mpg.
------------------------------
TourVanMan TM < Ex RF >
|
|
Similar effect to that Phil W observes is present in our 05 Berlingo with the 1.9 IDI unit. High 40's if held down to 65, dropping to upper 30's if pushed hard. Keeping the speed down makes suprisingly little difference to overall journey times and much more relaxed.
HDi 110 Xantia averages 45 whatever we do with it.

So as we can see, the Ford Focus, despite it's modest size, performance, weight and such is ridiculously expensive to fuel. Anybody know why?
It's no lightweight the Focus, even the mk1. Quite a lot of bulk for a 1.6 to pull along. I suspect it's no lighter, maybe even slightly heavier than the Celica.
Even so I wouldn't consider 36 mpg "ridiculously expensive"
Most agree the Focus works best with the 1.8.
Cheers
DP
|
For a Joe-average 1.6 I think 36mpg is a bit silly...the performance is no greater than a Golf mk4 1.6 and it's more thirsty than my mates (which also happens to be where I derive the weight comment from). And the Focus weighs 95kg less than the Celica - 1080 according to my manual.
|
That Adam bloke reckons it's a thirsty car IIRC. Where is he, seems rather quiet? Maybe he's got a job :-0

They do Martin. My brother in law once scraped 700 miles out of a tank with his, and regularly got 600-625 without things getting nervous at the end.
Lovely car to drive as well. I thought so anyway.

Renault 19 1.4 auto.
Motorway 38 to 41 mpg
Town 37mpg averaged over 2 weeks.
Bank holiday weekend 29 mpg (more time stationary than moving.)
It was probably less than 20mpg before I set up the carb, previous owner had used a smaller fuel filter than standard, then altered the mixture settings on the carb to compensate. (just guessing thats what happend as it ran fine with the wrong filter then used excesive fuel with the right one.)

Two cars
1) Golf GT TDI 110BPH (99/V)
Long term average (since new) about 54-55MPG, best ever 74MPG. Either short trips round town and up to 30 miles or very long 500 mile ones.
This car even manages to return about 50MPG on a long thrash down the motorway at 80+.
2) Honda Jazz (05/55)
Only done a few thousand miles but manages around 40-41MPG

Hi Martin,
My name is Eco Terry ( Sight Logo ) and I have had a very keen interest in lowering the cost of motoring by getting higher MPG out of my car, ( a range of 7 to 8 cars over the years ).
After 20yrs of doing this as a hobby I have accumulated a fair knowledge on how this can be done cheaply by anybody male or female with Ltd knowledge of mechanics.
If anyone is interested please let me know.

New type MKV Golf 1.6 FSI. Mainly used for country driving and little or no motorway driving. In the Spring, Summer and Autumn and often in Winter, the Aircon is invariably on.
I have kept a record (spreadsheet) since new, eighteen months ago, and have averaged 41.7mpg on mainly Optimax petrol. This figure is very close to the figures published by VW at the time. This figure is always slighty less than that indicated by the Multifunctional onboard computer which seems to read about 3% higher than the figure based on brimmed tankfuls and noting miles convered - you know, the usual thing.

I make that 41mpg. My estate does high 40s / low 50s driving hard. Does using bio reduce economy?

VW Golf TDI 115 estate - 46 in town, 55 cruising
Audi A4 2.5 TDI Avant - 36 in town, 44 cruising
Mercedes B200 CDI - same as the Audi - a bit disappointing. Must be having to have my foor closer to the floor to get some performamnce out of it.
|
Toledo reading 52mpg on the trip meter, driving carefully due to cambelt concerns! Mostly up and down the rev range driving, rarely holding a set speed for long, but not thrashing it.
|
What a difference since the schools broke up?
I've just recorded my best ever mpg in the Mondy - 48.2 mpg on the last tankful. 606 miles on 56.6 litres. It's normally getting scary around the high 500's, but cracked 600 with about a gallon left over.
The M3/M25 have been heaven during the past few weeks. My normal 45-50 minute run has been taking me half an hour at a steady 80-85.
Oh, and another pleasant surprise - diesel seems to have come down in the last week. Paid 96.9 at local Esso.
Anyone else noticed a consumption improvement in recent weeks?
Cheers

Definitely, the clearer runs means that the Almera's been getting 40ish mpg instead of mid30's. And i can leave at 5 and it doesn't take forever.

Mazda 6 2.0 TS petrol
Best 42mpg(optimax),worst 34mpg(winter-leaving car de-frosting).
Average 38.9mpg( normal shell unleaded, over 31000 miles) mostly dual carriageway and motorway.

Yup - although in my case I suspect Millers' Diesel Power Plus and some nice clean Havoline 5w30 semi-synth installed by friendly Ford dealer may be helping, also. Am getting 46.5 - 48 mpg at the moment. Oddly enough, since using Millers' the trip mpg is more accurate - now overreads by 2.9 mpg as opposed to 5.4. Not that I'm complaining...
|
Just managed 590 miles out of 47.05 litres (making 57mpg) in my mondeo TDCI 130. Trip computer claimed over 60.
Cruise set to 70 and air con only when its needed seems to do the trick.
|
Gunther (1.9tdi golf) has only been through two full tanks so far but I did about 540 miles on each (compared to about 300 in Polo). I'm still recovering from the £55 it takes to fill the tank though (compared to about £40 to fill Polo)! I know I'm saving money, but it doesn't feel like that when it comes to paying!
I have an 18 mile journey to work along a fairly quiet single lane/dual carriageway road, where it's rare to see another car. Normally the display shows an average of about 46mpg on that journey. However, today I read this thread before I left the office, didn't go over 60mph all the way home and the average went right up to 58mph. I've been surprised what a difference just backing off a little bit can make to the mpg average - I didn't think it would be such a marked difference.
The best I've ever had was an average of 62mpg on a long motorway journey where I was deliberately driving at 70mph-ish because I had overcompensated for traffic and didn't want to arrive too early. Gunther was only a week old then though.
My aircon is almost always on - it doesn't really make that much difference these days, does it?
|
....My aircon is almost always on - it doesn't really make that much difference these days, does it?
It depends what the outside temperature is, and on the vehicle.Recent tests by AutoBild showed that a newshape Zafira used 25% more fuel round town with the aircon on, outside temperature 30 degrees.
They also tested a Panda, Merc C-class, and something else. The Zafira was easily the worst.

RD350LC commuting 10 miles into Central London = 17 mpg. Alternative vehicle: 2.8i Granada, also 17 mpg. Ah, the 1980s, a decade of excess. Although the Granny would occasionally show 99mpg on the trip computer thingy....
Current dronemobile = 35 mpg on a similar commute. Tedious in the extreme, whatever happened to the extravagance of youth?
|
My Civic Aerodeck (1.6) has just topped 100k miles,- gives 39 mpg. on short journeys, 43 on long, mainly motorway driving.

Colt 1.1 has given 55 mpg brim to brim, 610 miles to a tank from a mixturer of short journeys and motorway miles.
|
About 40-43 MPG in a 330d 5-spd manual. Work commute is 10 miles motorway and 1 mile local streets. Motoway is always flowing so never stuck in traffic and there is a town trip maybe once a week. I tend to stick to the speed limit on the motorways (unless Im late for work) though I don't hesitate in giving it the berries when exiting roundabouts or entering motorways.
I guess what I am trying to say is that I don't drive with fuel consumption in mind.

1998 peugeot 306 dt - 45-50 mpg
1993 peugeot 205 50-60 mpg ..smaller 205 bit better on fuel but hardly noticeable
1992 Sierra 1.8 LX (cvh engine) 38 mpg ..not bad for a big car i thought
1980 Nissan Sunny 1.2 (ohv engine with points etc.) 40-45 mpg
1993 Nissan Sunny 1.4 (16v, carb, catalyst. ecu) 35 mpg at best ...disapointing it used so much more fuel than old car
|
The benefits of BP Ultimate seem to have gone; I now get 45mpg on the motorway with any type of diesel, and bizzarely, 50+ when thrashing it along country a-roads.
|
2000W Mk IV Golf Estate SE TDI90 (AGR engine), 95000 miles.
(oil consumption negligible - around 1/2 litre of semisynthetic between changes at around 9000)
Consumpion about
40-45mpg around town with no real traffic jams
46-47 on long, mainly motorway runs at 78mph on cruise control (best around 50mpg)
52 on local 18-30 mile commutes with no jams (best around 57-58)
40'ish when thrashed!
48 overall, but dropping (could be winter?)
Always trying to run at best economy using the fuel computer readout. Best general consumption at around 2800 revs.
Am trying to judge if the injectors are becoming worn so any other responses from owners of similar vehicles would be welcome!
Thx in advance

Passat 100hp PD is getting 42mpg overall commuting to the Peak District and got the same going up to Dundee and back for Hogmanay on motorways/dual carriageways at 75 ish..
Millers or BP Ultimate make no apparent difference to mpg but improve smoothness and feels torquier. I use the Millers and it costs ~2p per litre at mail order prices.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

Peugeot 307 SW 110 Hdi 1600cc (2005 reg), 45 - 48 mpg in town and 68 - 70 on the motorway. Very pleased with the car as it is the first of many peugeot's I have driven which have bettered the book figures.

2000 Nissan Almera 1.4 (16v DOHC injection), does 45mpg on a run, down to 36mpg around town. Only about 3 more mpg than my old 1990 Sunny 1.4 12v SOHC with carb (same engine block, different head). Much better performance from the Almera though thanks to the sixteen valves and fuel injection.
|
VW Passat 2002 2.5 Tdi Auto
28mpg congested urban
38mpg long run
(not very economical engine, poor gearing and shift logic)

Skoda Fabia vRS, 29,000 miles, all computer stats: 41mpg around town or short non motorway journeys, 45mpg on a regular long (fast) run, has been 36mpg on one occasion but less said the better! 55 to 60 mpg sticking at the limits, 9 gallon tank gives me just about about 400 miles. I use BP Ultimate and more recently Shell V-Power, both noticeably different to supermarket diesel in terms of smoothness, not sure about mpg, both with 5% bio-diesel mixed in.
SWMBO's Kia Picanto 1.1 auto, 10,000 miles, 31mpg mixed driving.
|
From the last 6 years
All driven in the same road 'mix' (in decreasing %): country A/B/unclassified roads, arterial A-road dual carriageway, small towns, city.
I drive between 16-19K miles per year, usually with 2 passengers
(calculated with mix of dead reckoning & on-board computer)
Cars:
Merc 220CE Coupe auto : 27mpg & Mini Cooper 1.6: 35mpg
Audi A4 1.9tdi quattro: 51mpg !
Audi A6 1.9tdi multitronic: 44mpg
Nissan X-trail 2.2DCI: 40mpg
Skoda Superb 1.9 tdi PD tip.: 42mpg
Merc C270 tip: 42.4mpg (current car)
So, tend to get at least the advertised overall consumption, esp. the A4
(although I really tried for economy with that one)

1989 Sierra estate-1.8 CVH.Have not worked it out exactly, but reckon around the low 30s,mainly around town.Improved slightly with recent new Weber and set of Avon Enviros.

Volvo S60 2.0T - 450 miles from 70 litres - 29.7mpg

46mpg showing on the trip computer. That's me mostly flooring it everywhere and putting in a tenner every now and then as I don't do many miles at all at the moment, and I do like a good blast round Chobham to blow the cobwebs away!

Huge thread and lot's of good info. Just wondered if anyone has looked into what is the best make, model etc for fuel consumtion based on the posts to date?

|
Nissan Note 1.5 Cdi - get between 62-65mpg on a commute, 65+ on a long A road run, falls to about 57-59mpg on a motorway run. Would benefit from a 6th gear. ;-)

1996 Suzuki Swift 5 door automatic, 993cc 3 cylinder petrol engine:
40 - 45mpg on a typical motorway trip [ would probably do better at a quiet time on a long run ].
25 - 35mpg urban [ Epsom area; choked solid most of the time! ].
That's with BP Ultimate / Shell V Power. Without these high grade fuels it's a lot more thirsty.
Tank size is 8.9 gallons according to the handbook [ roughly 40 litres ], I'm not sure how much is supposed to be left when it reads "E", but it seems to vary between just over 1 gallon to nearly 3 gallons - unreliable guage! Assuming 2 gallons remaining at "E" that gives me 7 usable so a theoretical range of about 300 miles. I am not willing to test my nerve to see just how much really is left....!!

Hi everyone
VW Passat 110 TDi saloon (manual) with > 140k total mileage
>53 mpg on motorway (55mpg + if run at 60-70mph)
~49mpg around town
Given my long history with this car (6 years), I've even noticed better fuel economy when tyres are at 2.1Bar vs 2 Bar pressure (though the latter is recommended for unladen driving)
Great forum by the way!

Sorry but i couldn't resist, I know i have a problem but i don't know what. Car is regulary serviced, in fact oil changes at 5k etc.
Ford scorpio 2.0 ultima auto....wait for it......13.4mpg. I've tried everything best was around 14 mpg. Seemed to have dropped from around 19mpg to current 13 ever since it got cold !!!
Still it's a comfy old thing !!

Achieved best yet with the Accord just after Xmas.
Quiet run Staffordshire - Dover - Reims - Arras averaged 57mpg. Averaging around 60-65mph, SWMBO was getting nervous about running out but I calculate that the warning light would not have come on until 670 miles since filling up and that still leaves 10l in the tank.
Over 87k it is averaging 50 mpg.
|
Fiat Coupe 20VT. I rarely go on the motorway, and usually average about 25mpg. The 6th gear really does make a difference when you do venture onto the motorways though. The best I got from it was while driving through Europe. Having spent practically the whole tank of petrol on the Autobahn I managed 35mpg, despite the fact that I spent an appreciable amount of the journey at between 100 and 125 mph.
|
looking at some of the figures above, there are some unbelievable figures............ either there are a lot of backroomers who are regular 'economy run' experts.......or......... there's a few porky pies been added....or..... i'm an exceptionally inefficient driver when it comes to mpg.
Jag S Type 3.0 petrol auto........15-17 (18.5 if you can keep it flowing) in town..........26.5 on a swift motorway run
Jag X Type 2.0 diesel est.........33/34 ish in town..........38/39 on a swift motorway run
toodling around on A roads, up and down the gear box, gives you marginally less than the swift motorway runs, for both cars

Well I have just been lent a hire car whilst mine is in for accident repair. A Peugeot 307 1.6 HDI SW.
I did 200 miles in it yesterday, 85% on motorway at steady 70MPH and it is showing an unbeleivable 68 MPG!!!!
When I fill up with diesel I'll work it out the manual way and see what it really is.
My BMW 320d does about 52/53 MPG average worked out by brim to brim fuelling. Driving conditions are mostly motorway at a steady 70 with crusie control on. If I drive without Crusie control, it knocks the MPG back by approx 2-3MPG.
|
Ford Focus Zetec hatchback 1.6 TDCi 109 DPF, overall 63 mpg.
A roads 73 mpg, urban 53 mpg, using BP ultimate diesel.
|
Renault Clio 1.5 dci 65 bhp
Average MPG = 57.8 to the gallon.
Am running BP Ultimate for the first time this week, needle goes down a little slower.
If I use Miller as per paulb then mpg up to 64/65/
Not bad eh.

Porsche 944 2.5 Gets around 30MPG & best ever is 460 miles on a tank full, the tank is 80 litres but never been that brave!
TR7V8 is 25-32MPG depending how it's being driven!
|
2002 Passat PD130 sport (with 6-speed manual), owned / thrashed from new.
'cos I'm a saddo who records mpg, it has averaged 46.5 (actual, not on the computer) over 52,000 miles of all kinds of driving (commuting, town, long m-way hauls, holidays etc etc).
Cruising at 80 / 85mph it always gives 50 - 55mpg on the computer (a genuine 50mpg).
It's a great car even though it's best friend would say the handling is dull and lifeless

Skoda Superb 1.4Tsi 2018 6'000 miles on clock.
47mpg over last 820 miles consisting of 120 local trips then return trip from Glasgow to the west coast of Wales. Doing 65-70mph on motorway south and 75mph coming home.
That was a full tank brim to brim plus £20 worth stuck in while down south to get me home.
I'm doing the same 700 mile return trip to Wales later this month. I'll brim the tank in Glasgow and see if I can do it there and back on 1 tank.
700 miles divided by a 15 gallon tank is 46.6mpg. So should just make it with a gentle foot without needing to go too slow.
Using Tesco Momentum. Good mpg for a big lump of petrol car.
