I've got a 1400cc Nissan Sunny (1990 model with 12v carb engine) which has been running poorly for a while.
The engine began misfiring, so I changed the distributor cap & rotor arm, and checked the leads (which are fairly new anyway). The misfiring problem seems a bit better now, but the engine still feels gutless, and has started backfiring under acceleration at low revs (1500-2000 revs). This seems worse when the engine's warmed up.
Any ideas? I'm thinking valve clearances, but does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Sparkplugs- maybe they're quite old or incorrectly gapped? You certain the plug leads are good? Coil lead also newish?

Replaced the plugs last November, leads have been on about 18 months. Coil lead was changed with plug leads.

hi greg just bought a nissan suuny in france and got the same problems did you overcome your??

Never overcame the problem - I replaced everything ignition-wise, so came to the conclusion after talking to a few carburettor specialists that the carb was knackered (they're good for 80-100k, mine had done 115k). Sold the car and replaced it with an Almera. Same engine, but fuel-injected and 16v head - makes the world of difference.

If the ignition was OK, I would check to see if the economy valve in the carburettor (if so equipped) was stuck in the economy position, thus giving a weak mixture during acceleration. Before junking the carb, it is worth stripping it down, cleaning it, and setting it up right. I've never *had* to replace a carb.

a compression test would have been my next port of call

Mmm - fair point. If the misfire was regular, then I agree a compression test is a good idea. I was assuming (probably incorrectly!) that the misfire and backfiring were more sporadic.
