Poor fuel economy 1.6 primera - teabelly
My other half's freshly bought 1.6 petrol primera seems to be doing around 10-15 mpg! Is there any obvious reason for this? The car seems to be running ok, feels a little sluggish. No warning lights, no other signs of rich running. It has a daily work journey of 20 minutes each way. At the moment it is guzzling more fuel than my skyline so there is something clearly wrong with it.

Are the petrol gauges in these known to be dicky? He is judging by the gauge at the moment as one of the possibilities is of course a leak so sticking in 10 gallons seems slightly risky :0-)

Could be a faulty temp sensor or lambda sensor.

Few minutes having the emissions checked would be a good idea...

Annoyingly the advisory sheet from the last MOT done by the dealer is missing otherwise we could have checked the emissions from March. There don't seem to be places that just do emission checks do there? I could happily buy myself a gas analyser but it seems a bit of an extravagence :-)

Any decent garage should be able to check the emissions for you, it doesn't have to be part of the MOT procedure.

Nip into local MoT station (with engine good and hot) and ask them to stick 4-gas analyser probe up your exhaust pipe and give you a print out. A crisp £10'er should do it - if you're a regular they may do it for free..

The panic about fuel usage was nothing more than my other half being caught out by the pessimistic fuel gauge. I did ask whether he was absolutely sure that it was indeed more than a gauge related incident, and he swore it was. He was wrong :-) Once he had filled the car up more he found it was doing more like 35-40 mpg.

Science A-levels too; I ask you. No proper experiementation was carried out to come to the 15 mpg conclusion. If I had done the same I would have never heard the last of it :-)
