Just wondered if people could let me know what their fuel economy is on peugeot HDI engines. My dad just got a 406 estate 2.0L (110bhp) and got 850 miles out of 1 tank believe it or not. Im interested in the 306 HDI but wondered if the fuel economy is as good? I know the 406 has a bigger fuel tank but it worked out at around 56 mpg and that was a lot of town driving.
My 1.9td 306 currently get around 42-45 mpg

If he filled up as soon as the light came on that's probably 63 mpg in that case!
My 90bhp 406 HDi saloon gives about 48 mpg, equating to 580 miles from a tank although I can usually only put in about 55 l when the light comes on although I don't consciously drive for ultimate economy.
For comparison, my 1.9 XUTD 406 gave about 41 mpg.

My new 1.6Hdi 92bhp Picasso is currently running at an indicated 54.3 mpg on mixed urban/rural. I will post actual next time I fill up, but it may be sometime.......

My Peugeot 306 HDi X-reg has achieved around 54 mpg since I bought it 2 years ago; better after being serviced (fuel filters cleaned etc, I suppose). Use always includes a mixture of motorways at 70mph and short local runs. I regularly use Shell fuel plus Miller's fuel additive. I believe I am right in saying the HDi doesn't produce more power than the previous generation of Peugeot diesels, but is significantly better on economy.

Yes the old 1.9TD produced 90 BHP as does the 2.0 HDI when used in the 306.

I have a 1.6 110 bhp hdi and it does 52 mpg in the windter and 55mpg in the summer - mostly non motorway A road and town stuff

Well it depends on the model. the 206 1.6HDi can produce more power & torque than was in the old 306 XUD unit. So you can have smaller engine with more power, which is a big plus.
Which makes me wonder why have the 2.0 litre fitted to the 307 with lower power...? Common rail gives more flexible performance (more 'decoupled' from the engine revs) which might be contributing positively to the economy achievable.
Also do the lower powered HDi engines have an intercooler..?

I used to get 52-55 from the XUDT engined 306 and about 3mpg more from my current HDI (99T, one of the first). HDi is a smoother engine, too.

I would agree with the MPG, but disagree with the HDI being smoother.
My Daughter has a 307HDI 90td, its far more easier to stall, noiser at higher revs and more temperamental with the throttle in traffic. The son-in-law who has an Audi is alot better all round.
But with my 1.9td I can uprated the power output without chipping etc and outpace a 110HDI and still achieve the same MPG off boost/crusing and without the black stuff.

Just shows that samples of the same car or engine aren't all the same, so dogmatic comparisons have to be interpreted with caution.

And a given Audi costs a lot more than an equivalent size/capacity PSA mobile!
