My colleges vw polo 1996 1.4 petrol
Next problem is horn is not functioning.
Apparently it was fine until he lent to someone and its stopped since.
Any ideas as to the cause
many thanks

try the simple things like the fuse, check for a feed to the horn when you press the button, dodgy horn wire up to the battery to test?????

The last time my horn was working was when it was test at the MOT I suggest that your mates horn failed some time priot to lending out the car. Locate the horn up under the front valance and use a meter or a bulb to check for the grounded signal when the horn is pressed. Regards Peter

as said the horn is at the front somewhere cant remember but be aware that the grille will come out if you are careful with a screwdriver pushing the clips in one at a time, the metal bit below it is held in with bolts onto the wing edges so you have to take the indicators out first to get to them.
If you can see the horn with the grille removed see if you can bash it with a jack handle or something to free the vibrating plates up this can sometimes work.
If you manage to unseize it try and spray some wd40 into it and try and remember to blow it about once a week in future to keep the plates unseized

Yep, sound advice. This happened to the horn on my Polo. It had power supply, so the horn was obviously at fault. Did what oldman said, but this wasn't quite enough, so removed it and struck off the ground several times. That got it working.

However, forgot to do this, thus its gone off again!

What a load of hassle!! Bearing in mind you cn buy a new horn for roughly a tenner at a motor factor AND that the horn is a safety feature, why bother taking a chance?

If it is the horn that is not working;check the circuits first.

its not the tenner its whether you can get to it that was the point, it can take a long time to strip the front off a polo if you have to

Remember as PeterD pointed out your horn works via a switched earth , pull the horn boss off the wheel and disconnect the brown wire touch this to the metal of the steering column with ignition on and see if the horn sounds if it does check the horn push and the contacts , a fairly common problem on polo's...cheers...Keo.

Your car’s horn is a safety feature built into the car to help get others drivers attention if they start to get into your lane, or in other situations to warn people around you of your presence to prevent wrecks or injury.
This is why it is important for you to have a functioning horn. Sometimes though your horn may stop working. Normally there are a few possible problems if this happens. Continue reading to learn what these problems are and also solutions for them. www.autoguysland.com/car-horn-not-working/
