Watched Car Wars the other night and they were following the local plod in Manchester. They have a special undercover squad who are using unmarked high speed cars to try and reduce the ammount of car thefts & ram radiers.
The programme was really interesting however an interesting fact of car crime in Manchester was this. The car of choice for all of the local slime balls to nick in Manchester is..... The Saab 9000!!
According to these special undercover cops the Saab 9000 is the number 1 stolen car because of its security flaw or though obviously he didnt say what it was. The car is seen as a status symbol by the local slime balls!. Quote "If you own one of these cars dont bother comming to Manchester if you want to keep it"
Any one lost a 9000 in Manchester?

I am sure that the facts you quote are correct. I find it odd that a car which is locked into reverse gear, by the ignition lock, which is on the centre console, is so easy to steal.
|
Maybe the slime balls all drive around in reverse.

Easy to spot then for PC Plod - if you can find one.

It's 900s not 9000s which lock into reverse and have the ignition switch on the centre console

I watched this program. IIRC, both the 9000 and 900 were favourite steals in Manchester.

There are two issues here.
1. Word goes round the thieving classes on how to nick a particular type of car, consequenlty if the security flaws of a particular make/model have been learnt word soon goes round - so why bother trying to overcome another type.
2. More sinister is that a SAAB (this year) might be the "signature" car to nick like the "tagging" of graffiti, its almost become an "honour" thing.

9000, I bow to your superior knowledge! I thought that the locking in reverse thing was a long standing feature of SAABs.

We px'd our old 9000 a while back; it fetched £400 in auction and was used in a ram raid oop north shortly after!
Quality car, a versatile criminal runaround.....

Very decent of the chaps to buy their chariot rather than just steal it. Standards are improving!
