Right have just bought beautiful 3 door 1998 Saab 900 s 2 litre from my neighbour. He can't tell me about the last timing best change (the car has 98000 miles). Methinks I read somewhere that this engine has a timing chain. Was it cheap at £1000? One owner, alloys etc

www.thesaabsite.com/900new/NG900timing4cyl2.htm suggests it is chain driven.
Do a search on completed sales on Ebay, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised - that money would only fetch a car two years older.

It is a chain but you need to give it a good supply of very nice clean oil, ie regular servicing!

Hi - Sounds like a good buy.
Saab now recommend only fully synthetic oil in these engines.

Thanks for this. I am geeting it serviced on Monday so will treat the engine to a fully synthetic refill. Delighted with the chain rather than the belt -bad experiences with an Audi A4!
