Prior to spot welding on a car, is it sufficient to remove the battery in order to protect the ECU? and are there any other devices that should be isolated electrically? Thanks in advance.

ever car is different so difficult to say,i usually get away with just a surge protector on the battery terminals you really need one of those.
But still not bullet proof protection.

In the past I have always disconnected the battery, and in the case if cars fitted with ECU's either physically removed them, or at the very least disconnected the ECU plug.....some ECU have there own earths...this is only my personal experience and I have never had any issues.......couple of things to note...when disconnecting some batteries the alarms go off....radio codes get lost, doors can lock (make sure you have the keys.........
Have fun

if i had to do it, i would disconect the battery and ecu! although battery surge protectors can be found fairly cheap, so it may be worth buying one for peace of mind
you may end up paying more to have radio code/ecu rest depending on car
