I am currently looking at a Ford Focus estate for a new company car and have a few questions
Why has Ford appeared to have replaced the PSA 1.6 diesel with the old 1.8 ?
(I know this has been covered in a topic on the C-Max recently but if anyone knows any more it would be much appreciated as I have a mental scar with Ford diesels dating back 10 years to my first company car, a 1.8d Escort)
How will either engine compare to the 1.9 Tdi 105 ?
I do around 50k miles a year mainly on A road dual carriageways and single ones with lots of hills and good overtaking oppertunities

Yes it was covered before, the 1.6 PSA engine has not been replaced by the 1.8, the range compromises 1.6 PSA 90, 1.6 PSA 110, 1.8 115, 2.0 PSA 136 though it is complicated by various emmisions systems on the different engine variants.
The 1.9 TDi is IMO far less refined than any of the Ford or Ford/PSA engines though would feel more gutsy at low revs, below 1800 rpm, than either of the 1.6 units.
My previous comments for what it is worth .....
"Although the 1.8 engine can trace its routes back a good 10 years or more and is mechanically basically the same engine as fitted to Mk 1 Mondeo Diesels it was transformed in the Focus in 2001 when fitted with the TDCi CR injection system. I have done 1500 miles in a brand new C-Max with the Ford/PSA 1.6 TDCi (110) unit and have also driven an old Focus (pre 2005) with the 1.8 unit and would say that the 1.8 compares favourably in refinement terms as well as feeling a fair bit more torquey, its economy is likely to compare well too.
That being said the does 1.6 does perform impressively in the C-Max which is a fairly large car though I found it a bit thrummy compared to my Mondeo TDCi 130, perhaps it would settle down after a few more miles."

Thanks very much for that Cheddar as the Ford website is not as clear about the 110 1.6 availability as you are !

I think you have to scroll down past the 1.8 to find the 1.6 110 in because it has a particle filter and is listed along side the 2.0 which has the same.

If anyone has answered the question "Why have Ford brought back the 1.8 TDCi engine?", I've missed it. Does anyone know?

Looking through the car mags, and at the price list on the Ford website, it seems like they've dropped the 1.6 TDCi 110. They now only seem to have the 1.6 90 and the 1.8 115 Tdci's...I must say, I'm intrigued as to why, I thought from reviews the 1.6 was the sweeter engine.

Hi,
I have just bought a Focus 1.8 TDCi and I am pleased with the car especially the engine. It's far better than I expected. The dealer did try and source a 1.6 TDCi 110 in the sport trim but he said that they had been discontinued.
I drove the 1.6 TDCi 110 in a Cmax. Its by far the smoother and refined unit, and its also far quieter. The 1.8 seems quicker if you put your foot down around 40 mph. The dealer had a quick blast down the road in it, and commented it was far quicker than his 1.6 110 model as well. Pleased me no end!!! Engine noise on the 1.8 is acceptable even at 70 MPH.
Perhaps ford have pulled it, due to 4 diesel in their Focus range. Do they really need that many?
Best regards
Baz

- do you mean the VAG TDi? Whilst my 105TDi GolfV was in the bodyshop I had a Pug HDi110 307SW. This felt so sluggish compared to the Golf throughout the rev range; the stopwatch confirmed it was far slower in a top-gear acceleration test over the same stretch of motorway. (It appeared to be approx 5mpg thirstier also - but it was a smoother running engine...).

Couldn't this be something to do with a low mileage (tight engine), or the weight of it being the SW version?

I seem to recall there were supply problems with the PSA diesels early on in the Focus 2's life. A friend couldn't even get a build date for a 2.0 TDCi 136 he wanted to order. He was told by a dealer that PSA were apparently prioritising their own models when allocating engines, and Ford were simply getting what was left over. Plus of course the diesel Focus is itself a massive seller.
Maybe this situation has something to do with it??
