First time on the forum, so please be gentle with me.
I've got a VW Passat, 110 Tdi, V reg, just before they switched to the PD engine. So far 144k miles. Oil changes every 5 - 7k miles, with decent synthetic oil, mainly motorway driving (50 miles to work every day). So far it's excellent. Any ideas what I need to look out for, especially engine wise over the next (hopefully) 100k miles. Is it realistic to expect it to do 200k ?
Thanks in anticipation.

If you keep up the good work, absolutely no problem.
In fact I'll bet it will do far, far more.

Do you have the history for the cam belt and tensioner change. If not change it I think the 110 engine was 80K so it could be due at 160k. Good VW specialaist will do that for around £150 Regards Peter

FWIW there was a Mercedes 300 turbo diesel auto estate on ebay recently with 460,000 - and only 10 years old.

That was an ex chauffeur driven car, then sold on to a chap on another forum that I reside on. An excellent car by all accounts. Just don't over stress the engine and keep up the regualar maintenance.

I had the earlier VW series 1.9 diesel (normally aspirated engine type 1Y), and I sold this over a year ago with 175k on the clock to a friend's daughter and she must have added another 10k since. No problems with engine at all. As earlier comments, regular oil/filter change and timing belt when schedule demands.

Thanks everyone. It was quite interesting about the cam belt. I bought it from auction (scary) - paid just over 2k for it with a SH. Anyway, in the history I couldn't find any direct evidence of the belt change, but I did find old reciepts, including one with the original owners name and address on it. It turned out it was PX, and was sold in the auction by the garage.
Since I had the name and address, I phoned up the woman who had sold it, to check the cam belt situation. Bit scary that details like that were so avalible though.
Thanks again

Whenever I have been sizing up a potential used car buy the dealership has normally been perfectly happy for me to contact the previous owner - if they are not then I walk away.

Colleague of mine has topped 250k miles in his SReg 110 Passat. He is a regular distance commuter and reckons the car is just loosening up.

"....sent us this photo of his 1993 Miata with more than 400,000 miles on the odometer! We're not all that surprised - MX-5 Miatas are incredibly reliable. For those of you who don't feel like pulling out the calculator 416,678 miles = 670,578 kilometers!"
