Good afternoon Chaps! (and ladies)
I took my gaffers BMW 330ci into kwik Fit for him to get two new rear tyres for the beast, they did the job then gave me the receipt as its charged to our company. I was amazed at the price!! £424 for two tyres, I know they are pretty big 255/45/18 but its seems very steep to me?? which leads me to the question... What type of profit are Kwik Fit, ATS, main dealers etc making from tyres? the mark up must be plenty!!
Thanks
Lee

not enough as they are only making £50 a tyre if its something like a continental,i agree they really should be making more on a tyre like that.

I bought some tyres a couple of weeks ago for a Yaris
£33-35 Online plus fitting etc
£60 from one large outfit
£69 from another large outfit
£47 from a local well equiped smart independant
£43 from a small outfit.
I did not ask KwikFit as when I called in, as I was passing, they were too idle to look up for a common vehicle and even give me an approx quote.
I did not enquire at any more large outfits.
I just got each quoted price and did not ask for a better price.
I find it difficult to understand why there is such a wide variation in prices especially at the top end of these prices.
I wonder what the price variation / profit would be for special tyres?

Large outfits have more overheads than your local independent so will charge more. As an example: How many times has your local independent advertised on prime time TV? Someone has to pay for it!

I accept that but-
I have never seen other than KwikFit on TV.
I have seen one or two of the others in the national press.
My local independant does have frequent large adverts in the local and free press.

Does your local independent have a head office in an expensive city, an accoutancy department, a whole team of lawyers protecting it's good name, a HR department, a marketing department, an IT dept, a property dept, but more importantly a chairman with a huge country estate, a helicopter in the garden, a yacht in Cannes and a private residence in Bermuda and a whole bunch of shareholders who want a good return on their investment!?
They will get healthy discounts on the raw material (could be 70-80% off the price the consumer pays), but all the above overheads have to be paid for from this. In 2004 Kwik Fit made an after tax profit of just 5.5% on turnover - hardly 'rip off' levels.

But they have a higher turn over and so should have bigger buying power, which means they can/should pass on the savings to the customer.

My son has a 330Ci and had a puncture 12 mths or so ago - Kwikfit quoted around the £200-£210 mark each (cannot recollect exactly) and my son refused saying he would wait 24 hrs for Costco to get the right size in - Kwikfit then dropped the price by about £70 to come within £10 of the Costco price.
So to answer how much profit? In the case 1 Tyre @ £200 they can drop £70 and they would not be selling at a loss.
|
Mytyres prices for that size range from £80 to £180, which sughgests at least £30 more mark-up per tyre than them, hard to tell without the tyre make and model though.
|
So what's a good online tyre firm?
|
Those poor 18 inch alloys in Kwik Fit and they probably used knock on weights as well. OOOchhh. Regards Peter

|
www.mytyres.co.uk have always given me the best price, and deliver them to your house (or the garage you want to fit them) within a few days.
Other people swear by www.blackcircles.co.uk but they've never beaten the mytyres price for me, and in fact don't stock my favoured brand now (Toyo)

When I used to research the fastfits for tyre and exhaust prices for a living Kwikfit always were the most expensive. Independents were always the cheapest. This was consistently the pattern year after year.
I recently bought some Goodyear NCT's 195/60 15's V rated:
Kwikfit £85 fitted all inc
Independent £55 fitted all inc
Seems nothing has changed.

Most people don't have a clue about the cost of tyres (or it's on the company) so, when their rubber need replacing, names such as Kwik-Fit etc spring to mind because of constant advertising campaigns.

I had a rear puncture this weekend, very upsetting as the tyre was only a few weeks old, and also being a replacement for another with a puncture too close to the edge to be repaired.
I stopped at National tyres who removed it and found two 2" nails a third of the way around from each other. One was too close to the edge to be repaired, and apparently they weren't far enough apart either. So I asked for the price of another P7 - £135, I told them I had only paid £77 for it a few weeks ago, they couldn't match it - weren't bothered - so I just left with the spare wheel on and wheel and tyre in the boot. Went to my independant who charged £77 as expected.
That's £60 more for the same tyre, so they probably make £80 margin!

I'll NEVER use them again for my own tyres on the Mondy. I'll try the dealer and the local firms. As stuartli said, the constant adverts with offers of 10% off etc and "permanently low prices" must fool most of the general public. Oh well saying that business is business and people are willing to pay it, they won't stop the high prices.

Recently bought 2 Vredstein Hi Trac 185/65 r14 from MyTyres total came to £61 Fitting cost £16, local independent wanted £51 each for Michelin Energy's or £ 40 each for Firetone.
Thing i have found is a lot of tyre chains when i phoned asking about Vredstein say "We don't sell cheap tyres" threy are right about that, they don't.

You *might* be being misled here - many business's have agreements with Kwik Fit where they get substantial discounts off the invoice. I used to work for a firm that owned its own cars and we were under very strict instructions not to buy tyres anywhere else. It's been the same on lease cars I've had.

Absolutely agree, Kwik Fit prey on those who have no knowledge or can't be bothered to shop around. When I had a company car my lease company FORCED us to use Kwik Fit, and that as sure as hell was the only way you would normally get me in one of their branches !

That's the whole idea of advertising
I haven't been in one of their branches in years but have used their mobile service for my company cars for the last 7 or 8 years and always found them OK. Don't know about the cost but if my company's fleet department and leasing company allow it it can't be that expensive.
I do wonder sometimes what the difference is between their lease company prices and their public prices

"Kwikfit always were the most expensive, independents were always the cheapest. This was consistently the pattern year after year"
Agreed. But it is still possible to find special offers such as "Buy 1, get another ½-price" from chains such as ATS from time to time. Shopping around for tyres is always worth while.
|
Kwikfit have matched an exhaust price for me once, saving me round £40.
They didn't bother checking what I told them, they just agreed to match the price. So we went next door for lunch whilst they did the job.
I believe they do the same with tyres.

Generally I have also found that the kwik Fit are extremely expensive. Admitidly it was a few years ago (Oct 2002), but I was amazed at the difference in prices.
I was looking for four 175/60 R13H's for my Nissan Micra (only on the S/SR/Super S), which were rarer than the standard 13in tyres (155/70 R13S/T). I was quoted between £65 - £90 each at Kwik Fit and about £75 at most of the other 'national chains' for reasonable quality makes.
What I was astonished at was that one of the smaller independant chains (part of the well-known 'Micheldever'/Pro Tyre group) quoted about £50 each for top quality makes like Goodyear (Venturas) and Bridgestone (Potenza Re720s). They also gave me a choice of a couple of lesser-known makes (owned by the larger brands) at about £35 each.
I went for the Bridgestones, and was very pleased with the quality of service and the tyres chosen. It was noticeable that many others had come to the same conclusion as there was a large queue at the fitter's gates when I arrived for opening time.

I wonder where a lot of main dealers get their tyres fitted??
It wouldnt be your friendly local independent by any chance??
Particularly those nasty ultra low profiles and runflats fitted to very expensive alloy wheels.

I found Costco easily the best place to buy tyres. Particuarly when they have one of their periodic 25% discount weeks. I reshod the A6 on all corners for £250 last year. Don't ask me what make or size because I have no recollection except that it was a well nown brand name !
The very fact that Costco sells tyres illustrates how high the margins are on this line. Their MO is to stock items with a sufficiently high margin to allow discounting whilst retaining attractive profit.

Hi Ubidenmark,
I never knew costco did tyres, just had a look on there website and was really suprised, I might well give them a bash next time around. Do you have to be member or anything? sounds very cheap for 4 tyres on an A6. Awesome!
|
I had to replace two tyres on my car last month (195-65 15 v), rang round, cheapest at first was the local indepentent, Goodyear NCT @ £55.00 each all in, Kwik-Fit most expensive,(can't remenber exact price), National wanted £74.00 each but asked if I had any better price, told then of local price and they immediately reduced price to £50.00, still went to local as I feel they had give their best price first off, if National can knock 33% off the top of their price without batting an eyelid, and presumably still make an acceptable profit, there must be plenty of headroom to start with.

Do you get any warning of the discount weeke, or is it just a matter of chancing upon them?
|
Discount weeks are often with their "Passport Offers" - end Sept till mid November and then the tyres are 1 week only out of that 8/9 weeks.
The last tyres I bought at Costco were at the same time as £10 Michelin Vouchers I so got tyres for £33 instead of their usual £43 fitted (185x60x14)
But even the £43 price for Michelins is excellent compared to even the best independents normally charge for Michelins.
That said Hunters garage in Linlithgow sells a variety of good makes Firestone, Avons etc (Not Michelins) at good prices everyday of the week - so it pays to look around.

Leef: Unfortunately (fortunately?) you do have to be a member of Costco to use their tyre outlet as well as their warehouse. I think all the details for membership are available on their website.
Bill Payer: I think the last time they had an offer on (something like 20% off when you buy 4), we got a leaflet through the post. I think tyres can appear in their 'passport to savings' voucher book, which is posted to you, but I stand to be corrected on that.
I agree that Costco is BY FAR the best place to go. Fully fitted, they were still cheaper than the online traders. Add on top of that, the convenience of them being open past 5 O'clock which means you could go after work if you wanted.
|
Had my two fronts (which them became the two rears!) replaced at Costco a while ago and can't speak highly enough of the service.
Dropped the car off with Mum and Dad and then went shopping with them. Came back, collected the keys and it was easy as that.
|
And yes - somewhere in there I did actually pay!
