Anyone know what that building is that's going up on the verge between M4 J11/10 eastbound?
I've only seen it from the B3270 that runs alongside the motorway at that point, but it just looks like a small house.

Having only seen it from the M4, there are no windows, so presume it's for storage/protection (or else for a vampire or mushroom growing - too small for holding the purple worm trunking that is being installed the length of the Wiltshire M4...)

From Highways agency:
"The structure you refer to is a transmission station ... related to the new motorway communications system being installed on the M4 between J8/9 - 10.
Motorway communications upgrade - M4 Junctions 8/9 to 10
The Highways Agency is installing a £6million road-driver communications project to improve the safe running of the M4 between Junctions 8/9 (Maidenhead) and 10 (Reading).
Starting July 2005, new variable message signs, traffic detection loops, and emergency telephones will be installed. The signs, which will display pictures as well as text, have been proven to be safer for motorists and will provide drivers with better information about incidents and conditions on the road ahead. The project is planned to be completed by Spring 2007.
A new incident detection system will identify queuing traffic and automatically activate signals to warn approaching vehicles of a hazard. Drivers will slow down in time to reduce further incidents and then consider alternative routes, which will ease congestion. Similar schemes in the UK have reduced the number of injury accidents by 13 per cent."

Hopefully the number of collisions between vehicles and immovable objects on the verge won't increase significantly.

As the vehicles are seldom moving that is not a significant problem.

Thanks for the info - so it IS related to the purple trunking. Bad news - the installation of these systems has been disrupting traffic further west for months.
Before Christmas, the display signs around J13 seemed often to be displaying incorrect info. Recently this has changed - by rarely displaying anything!

"traffic detection system" eh? Wouldn't also happen to facilitate future intro of road pricing would it?. [oops - veered off the subject don't know what came over me]
