Hi.Looking for some advice (again).Noticed that my 2004 Vectra Sri has a strong petrol smell inside the car when left running.I hadn't really noticed this until it had the Piston rings upgraded (Warranty) as it had lost oil.It isn't my imagination,my mate has also commented on this. When the car is running and the heater is on (hot),it seems to be worse.Normal, petrol leak or something else? Thanks

Any chance that there's a crankcase breather hose left off or split? The fumes from that could be quite strong - particularly if it's still re-bedding it's rings?

Can anybody offer advice as to what could be causing a distinct smell of petrol in my car when its in idle.On a few occasions now I have left the car running to get a paper. On returing to the car there is definitely a smell of fuel.It has been in the Dealership twice and they say they can't find anything.I have to admit,it doesn't seem to be there every time.It seems intermittent, which doesn't make sense.Approx 6 months ago,it had piston rings replaced under Warranty.I hadn't noticed the smell until recently,so not sure if this is related to the smell or just coincidence. It is not just me,several of my mates have noticed the smell. Not sure where the problem could lie.Catalytic converter, fuel line leak etc, etc. My car is the 2004,2.2 Direct engine.

Are you trying to get it stolen? It's unusual for a dealer to replace piston rings, have they done it properly, and could there be a connection?

Have a look at the vast array of small pipes round the injection unit and see if any have dropped off or come loose.

Do I want it stolen?? Not now,but if you'd asked me a few months ago......Never out the Dealer's.Only after buying it (from a reputable dealer)did I find out that it was an ex- DELETED Rental Car =0( Anyway,I'm happy with it now.the piston work was carried out because the car appeared to be losing oil.The work was instructed by Vauxhall.Have they done it right? I have no idea, but I am not imagining the smell. The Dealer has had it twice now and have found nothing.i would have thought they would know what to check since they carried out the work.

I would firstly remind you that leaving the vehicle with the engine running, unless it was on private property, is a violation of the road traffic act. Having said that get the Dealer shile to over-ride the ECU and keep the fuel pumps running whilst the engine is not. This may show up the leak. I would also comment that changing rings so early can be caused by over-fuelling, is that the real problem. Regards Peter

Over-fueling??? Not to my knowledge.Without sounding "patronising", how is this done?. If this had been self-inflicted and not a known problem,as such, I don't think Vauxhall would have been so forthcoming under Warranty? My concern is that there may be a fuel leak, but wasn't sure if something else could be causing the issue. Thanks

A couple of years ago I had a car that smelt of petrol. Put up with it for months before deciding that something must be wrong. It was a crack in a plastic tube, found when bending the tube and the crack opened up.
