Pulled into a motorway services yesterday; rolled up to the forward pump & started topping up.
Then I noticed the fuel was 102.9/litre (against the 96.9 flagged at the entrance) and stopped.
Anyone else been caught out by poor markings at the actual pump ?
I've no problem with the fuel - definite improvements against my normal Shell (see HJ FAQ) - just the unclear marking.

Could have been worse, you might have put petrol in it. A couple of people on here have caught out like that.
Why can't it just be black for diesel and green for petrol? Why do we need yellow or blue pumps?

Petrol ? No chance !
This was diesel : feels like diesel, smells like diesel, label says diesel = must be diesel.
Only the price hinted it might be +++diesel.
Work it out: possible 66 litres at an extra 6p/litre...

i wasn't saying that you had put petrol in. i was simply saying that some stations (BP among them) have confusing pumps and a couple of people here have mistakenly put in petrol instead of diesel and vice versa.

£3.96?

And those that have put in petrol its almost always at a BP garage becuase of its varied choice of colours.
Rarely happens at Tesco where all you get a choice of Green or Black.

Let's hope you get the claimed payback in terms of performance and economy. As I recently posted, I am right now having a look at a tankful of BP Ultimate which cost a premium of 4p/litre but as yet (early days) I've noticed no obvious benefit.

According to the computer, if I use BP ultimate diesel I get about 1 mpg more than the normal fuel. That's in a Mondeo TDCi 2.0
I still wonder if it's worth the extra, for the stated cleaning properties. I can't detect any difference. Car seems to run just the same.

Have you tried biodiesel its said to have really good lubrication and is good for the enviroment at the same time also cuts down on smoke immisions...

Every time I fill up at the pumps I put in 2 litres of biodiesel which is just under the 5% mix that Skoda say is fine with my PD130 engine. I haven't noticed any improvement or deterioration in economy or performance but whereas before on strong acceleration it smoked noticeably, now it hardly smokes at all. That is after about 8 tankfulls with the mix.
|
When they say 5% mix, they mean the diesel itself is 5% bio and 95% from crude, surely. Putting in 5% of 5% is very little indeed (0.25%, I think), and while I'm thrilled you notice a difference, I'm not sure it's the fuel!

I was fooled by the marking on the ultimate pumps and merrily put petrol in instead of diesel, ''what a plonker I am'' said I to the AA man who towed me to a garage, ''I average one a day'' said he. Didn't quite understand wether it was a plonker a day or unfortunate soul who put in the wrong fuel......

Oh and just to re-affirm
Renault dCi.
Ultimate Diesel = Smoother, Perkier at low revs, No difference in MPG
VW 105 PDI
Ultimate Diesel = Nothing, Nada, Zilch Difference.

I've used Shell Optimax Ultimate Super Extra Special BreW Diesel and noticed absolutely no difference. BUT...... I'm still running in my car and I think that it would be unfair to REALLY critiscise at this stage.
I just felt like a marketing victim.

By the way, Chrysler 300C CRD 36.2 mpg over a 700 mile round trip.

Having petrol in a diesel twice in 7 years, I am led to ask how many people put diesel in a petrol engined car and, if it is not very many, to what can the difference be attributed?

On car made for quite some time, the diesel nozzle won't fit in an unleaded filler neck.

BP, thanks for that explanation! I have rund diesel cars for over 7 years so I wasn't aware of this very sensible design feature!

did exactly this on Saturday...cost me nearly £70 to fill up and thats how i twigged on. Came back out from paying, looked at the pump and noticed the price - nothing on the pump to say it was ultimate.
Thought I may get a few extra miles but got less than usual when I filled up again on Wednesday, although it definately made a difference to how responsive the car was at low revs
