I bought a Ford Focus TDCi Ghia estate 02 plate via an auction trader. It had a "4000 RDS" radio cassette stereo system, with steering column controls.
The trader kindly replaced this with a "6000 CD RDS E-ON" radio CD player, but said he could NOT connect this to the steering column controls.
Assuming this is correct, how could I connect the "6000 CD RDS E-ON" to use the steering column controls? Perhaps I need a new connector or adaptor? I retain the "4000 RDS".
Help appreciated.

Hmmm. I would have thought a Ghia would have had either the 5000, 6000 or even the 6006 given the age of it.
I can't directly help you but I'll give you a little information on what happened with me.
I used to have a Fiesta Ghia whilst Dad had what is my car now (a '99 Focus).
The Focus has a 6000 and the Fiesta had a 5000.
When I got a new stereo for the Fiesta, I put my 5000 into Dad's Focus because all his music was on tapes but the remote controls wouldn't work. They connector for them wouldn't plug into the back of the 5000 because there was no place to plug them into unlike the 6000.
Now I could be completely wrong, but;
a) I'm not entirely convinced that the controls would have worked with the 4000 unless you know otherwise
b) The controls SHOULD work with the 6000 (the same system as I've got).
You're best popping the radio out and looking at the back without disconnecting anything. I can't remember exactly but there should be another little "port" for want of a better word in which to plug the steering controls into. Maybe he couldn't find the wire - it may be hiding somewhere behind the fascia.
Like I say, I could be wrong - I'm not too hot on the diesel spec but an 02 plate Ghia should have had a 6000 as standard I would have thought.
If you manage to pop the radio out (you don't have to disconnect anything) and are unsure, post back and I'll take mine out and take a photo or something.
Good luck,
Adam

There are a number of variations of the Ford units, even when the same model is printed on the fascia. The important number for compatibility, is the part number printed on the side with the serial number. Did you ask the dealer why he couldn't make the controls work? As Adam says, if the socket is there, it should work if connected. If there is no socket on the head unit, there is no way of making the connection. If the set has a proper rotary volume control, lack of steering controls is not so much of a problem (IMHO).

The plug may be taped back behind the radio, brown wire and white wire IIRC.

I can't believe that a Ghia would have a 4000 fitted as standard, either. Seems to me like it probably would have had something like a 6006 and someone along the selling chain has done a crafty and done a swap!
I fitted a 6000 into my brother's Mondeo last weekend. This was a direct replacement for the 5000 which had been fitted from new.
No steering wheel controls to worry about so I can't give you any advice there, I'm sorry to say. All the cables just swapped over, the only unused socket was a green one with about eight connections; I believe that this may well be what connects to the external CD autochanger, that is, if you have one.
Strange thing, my Mondeo also has a 6000 but mine has a rotary knob to control the volume but the one my brother obtained (from Ebay) has a rocker control. Not too sure which design is the oldest, perhaps someone here might know.

I didn't know there were different variations under the same number I must admit!
I have the rotary volume control and can confirm the green socket is for the changer. I was amazed how easy it was to connect up and after market changer!
The 5000 in my Fiesta had a rocker volume control. At a guess I'd say that means the rockers are the older design but I am guessing!

Hi,
The TDCi Ghia would have been factory fitted with a 6000 with steering wheel controls. If its a TDci 115 then it would have had the 6006. So somewhere along the line the car has had a 4000 unit fitted.
The steering wheel controls (actually a steering column STALK) are the same on the 4000, 5000, 6000 and 6006.
On the back of the radio are 3 multi pin connectors. The one with 3 wires has the steering column controls (the wire colours are green/white, black/white and brown/yellow), so if that connector is plugged in to the radio then it should all work - if it worked with the 4000 that is.
Hope this helps.

It is possible when you buy a new Ford to request a different level of radio;I had my Ka upgraded to a casette player from none and my Escort downgraded from CD to casette.

Did you get this sorted TG?

Thanks to all who replied. I hoicked the "6000 CD RDS E-ON" out with my trusty coat-hangers! It has:
- Part# 97AP-18C815-HA, Serial# M122528
- (one side of plastic ?cable-clamp)
Connector inlet Part# 96FP-14A524 wherein 3 sockets:
o 2 x single in-lines (SIL: 8,7-way) with plugs mated
o 1 x 6-way SIL with ** no plug mated **
- (other side of cable-clamp, near to coaxial aerial inlet)
12-way dual in-line (DIL) socket inlet ** no plug mated **
Hanging loose behind the "6000" was 17-way DIL PLUG with cores:
6=Green/White, 11=Black/White, 12=Brown/Yellow, 15,17=Green/Blck
Whereas "4000 RDS" has:
- Part# YS6F-18K876-DA, Serial# M110570
- (one side of plastic ?cable-clamp)
Connector inlet Part# 98AP-14A624 wherein 3 sockets:
o 2 x single in-lines (SIL: 8,7-way) with plugs mated
o 17-way dual in-line (DIL) connector socket inlet
CONCLUSION:
Ford changed the Steering Control connectors. I need either SIL-6 or DIL-12 Plug, then to rewire 5 cores from DIL-17 into it.
Does anyone know part# for which SIL-6 or DIL-12 plug I need for steering controls for "6000", also pinout cf 17-way DIL from the "4000"?
