Hi
I have a Golf Mk4 1.6 SE which has hesitation problem which I have posted on here recently.
I have now changed the air filter. When I changed the Air filter I had a look around the engine area and check the new throttle body VW had fitted. I notice that the small pipe that comes from the throttle body pipe was completely squashed. It leads directly into the engine just below the oil filler cap. I inspected the oil cap and found it coated with a creamy substance.
I took the car to another garage to get a battery check but this is going to take about 5 hours, the garage guy said the battery may be flat or faulty. He had a look at this squashed pipe too and decided to take the complete throttle body pipe off. When we look inside it was caked inside with this creamy stuff too and the small pipe was collasped into inself. He cleared it out as best he could but he said that this was propably causing a problem as the engine couldnt breath?
Sorry to go on, Im now stumped, can this cause hesitation problems? My car has visited VW loads of times, had its service in December so why didnt they check the pipes? Shall I go back and cause a big fuss! If they dont help can I go elsewhere to get it done-its still under Warranty.

Ok this is the top end breather and if it is sucking in the creamy stuff into the throttle body then there is the hesitation. Now do you also have creamy stugg on the inside of the filler cap and or dip stick, as this may indicate a seriuos head gasket fault. However if you do lots of short runs then this and the type of oil used can generate the creamy stuff in the winter months due to excess condensation. Come back to the forum. Regards Peter

Thanks for your simple explanation. I do have creamy stugg on the underside of oil filler cap and a bit further into the engine- I can see it right down inside!( Its not on dip stick though)
I use my car everyday and my journeys can be from about ten to 100 miles. Ive never had this creamy residue on any other car that Ive owned. I did mentioned Head Gasket to VW Dealer, who reply as - if I do short journeys then thats the caused and because there's no oil in my water that was it from them!!
Surely a modern car shouldnt do this-even on shortish journeys. If the breather pipes werent blocked then the engine could breath and there wouldnt be any condensation and everything would be fine?
Do you think I could TELL VW Dealer to completely clean all the breather pipes under my Warranty- Ive had this problem from day one of owning the car.
Thanks Noel

Are you loosing water form the header tank yes or no. ?? regards peter

Hi Peter
No water loss from Header tank.
I took car to another VW specialist, he looked at car for me. He said that he can hear 'air' being sucked in were this small breather pipe is. He said that he is always replacing the throttle body pipe as even the slightess hole can cause problems, as the only air must come only from the air filter, as this is a sealed/closed system.( I know what he means)
He said if the car under Warranty, take it back, tell dealer to replace throttle pipe, flush the engine to clear all 'stugg' out and put in new oil and filter on.
I have now written to the main VW dealer stating that Im not happy with the treatment me or my car have received; Ive had no reply as yet.
My partner is coming with me to speak to dealer and hopefully because his a bloke;he can talk some sense into them!!
Noel.
