My Audi A6 2.5 TDI will start each morning but after a run and 3 hours or so standing it takes 10 or more turns to fire. The glowplugs are fine so it is probably some engine management sensor. My garage has not been able to pinpoint the problem. Has anyone suggestions as to what it might be?

A friends car (Seat Ibiza)had a similar problem recentley that turned out to be the waterpump (yes I did say waterpump!!!) The WP bearings were dramatically failing, although the pump was not actually leaking. This caused a variation in diesel injection timing that meant it took 10 more turns to start when warm. When cold starting was much better, probably due to the operation of the glowplugs.
When the cam cover was removed and the engine started you could see the WP drive pulley moving around violently. The diesel rattle was masking the noise. I have no idea why it wasn't leaking, the coolant level had not dropped!!. We quickly turned the engine off!! and it wasn't started again until a cambelt kit and new waterpump were fitted. Starting now fine.
LUCKY ESCAPE!!, the car had driven over 100 miles in this state!!
Check any thing that could affect the diesel timing. E.G. was the cambelt changed recently?
