Hi folks

Hope you have had a better start to the New Year than I have had.

Had my Seat Leon serviced end of Nov but it broke down end of Dec. Oil warning lights came on. I stopped car called RAC took me to garage.

Previous to this car seemed perfectly fine no noise - nothing!

Turns out car had been running low on oil - breather clogged up!
Needs new short engine. Dont use dealer as couldnt find reason for a previous fault so use independant vw garage who I had been recommended and been happy with..

3 weeks later they are now fitting me with a reconditioned short engine and building it up using parts off existing engine.

My problem - Do I trust car. Do I keep or trade in? As you can imagine looking at bill for £1,500plus. Will the car run ok in future or will having a recon cause problems of its own?

Any advice or opinions gratefully received

Anniej

if they are rebuilding a short motor up for you then i would have confidence in them and the car.

Serviced in November and breaks down in December with a very serious fault? And you're not suggesting that the servicing garage has some responsibility for the failure? Or have I misunderstood?

Thanks for reply

First priority was to get it sorted. Afterall, how could I prove it was their fault - should they have checked the air breather? it was a standard service and not a full one. Have had different opinions about the question of 'fault'. Yes could have gone in there all guns blazing but to what avail. Needed car fixing quick. Live in middle of nowhere and very reliant on car.

If I took legal advise and tried to prove blame - would have cost more! No win situation really. Have been very pleased with their work in past - they managed to sort a fault that the main dealer - (I quote "Computer says NO") - told me didnt exist. But I was losing power and all steering - ended up in the middle of the road several times and almost in a ditch!

They were recommended to me by a friend who is a mechanic by trade - he says owner of garage decent chap and reliable....

So should I stick with car or trade in?

if i read this correctly as i thought i did this morning you are saying the oil pickup pipe in the sump was blocked and therefore the engine was starved of oil?
The only way this could happen would be if the oil hadnt been changed at recommended intervals and turned to gloop or there was a foreign body in the sump that was picked up on the pipe.
The only other reason this could happen was if oil changes were done via the suction through dipstick method if this was the case then rubbish does get left in the sump and is a good reason for insisting this method isnt used on your car.
One final thought, if above is correct make sure a new oil pump is fitted when engine is rebuilt

Thanks didnt know this. We have made sure the car is serviced at the suggested intervals so guess they have used the method you described. Will ring them Mon and make sure about the oil pump.

From one point of view I think your right - but you know what its like once you lose faith...

Rogers reply is the other side of the coin - should I have faith in a garage for whom I maybe should be blaming for fault?
