Mercedes Specialist Exeter/Wellington - smoke
Hiya, can anyone recommend a good Mercedes Specialist in the Exeter/Devon area. Also, can anyone tell me how having a merc serviced outside the dealer netowork affects the 30 year anti corrosion warranty.
cheers
Sid

Within the MB Club, I see MBS of Exeter mentioned favourably more than anywhere else, and they are listed in the club's Good Garage Guide, the most recent endorsement being only last month. 01392 493222

i couldn't find MBS on the website. I found a specialist garage section on the MB Club site, but no mention of MBS anywhere. Can you post a link?

One of the 500+ links on the links page I created and maintain for the MB Club is:

www.mbsmercedes.co.uk/

But that's the official MB Club at

www.mercedes-benzownersclub.co.uk/

and not the MB Club UK forums or the MB Owners Association (which isn't really a club).

Roger, thanks for that. Can you let me know how servicing outside the dealer network affects the warranty. The car is my gf's father's W210 E240 Estate, and with these i believe that rust can be a BIG problem, which is why he is keen to keep the perforation warranty intact. I know that according to EU exemption regs, this is not really allowed, but i stories i have read suggest that MB don't like contributing unless there is a full MBSH.

Smoke, I have experience of this.
Its not just that they like you to have full MB SH, the main issue is that the dealer will probably have to lobby MBUK on your behalf. This means that you ideally need to have a very good relationship with the dealer - i.e. have bought the car from them and always had it serviced by them.
To be honest, if the tinworm strikes on a W210 then best to shift it on. I sold one that had been repaired by a dealer under warranty and 12 months later the rust was coming through again (the buyer came back to me to grumble about it!).

Thanks for that info. Probably not worth spending 800 pounds for pad and disc change at MB, just to keep this warranty intact.

Mobilolife gets renewed every time you have the car serviced - I believe it's pretty common practice to use the dealer for routine servicing but have everything else done at a specialist.

Sorry about keeping this going, but don't MB notice, e.g. if work they advise is done yet they havn't done it?

I guess they may know but this *shouldn't* be an issue - I'm not saying it won't be, just that it shouldn't be. Especially if the repairer uses genuine MB parts.
There are cases noted on the MB forums where they've paid for rust repairs even though the car has had some independant servicing. Apart from the Mobilolife issue, MB does have legal obligations regarding reasonable lifetime of its products so they could get prosecuted (or sued - I've seen references to a UK class action) if they refused to repair the car.

Having said all that the 'buzz' on the MB forums is that MB is toughening up on these claims, and where they'd replace panels in the past, they're now being repaired.

If you're looking for a cheaper, authorized, job, try one of the approved MB repairers (generally people who used to be dealers before MB's last re-org) or try MB Direct - when I bought my car there, they said they were much cheaper for servicing / repairs.

If the E240 estate hasn't yet broken out in a rust rash, it may not do so. Many cars (and not only the W210) have suffered, but not all. As the W210 went out of production in 2002, there's been plenty of time for it to show its spots, unless it really has been cosseted and put away bone dry in a bone-dry garage.

If I were its owner, I'd get it looked at very carefully by an MB bodyshop -- usually subcontractors, so ask the local dealer who they use -- specifically for the known rusting weak spots. If none are found, then relax, but if there are signs then heed Aprilia's advice and get shot of it.

This issue has cost MB dear in terms of reputation and cash. I'm not at all surprised by reports that they are getting ever more rigorous about accepting responsibility, if only because it has depleted their coffers so deeply.

Heh, the car is a 2000 on an X plate. And is ANYTHING but cosseted. It spends , most of its time out in the open, unwashed for months, and with seats folded down flat and slight remenants of garden detritus around the place. It gets serviced on schedule by MB. When i have looked at it i havn't seen any rust, but may be an idea to get it inspected, and then either leave the dealer network totally, or get the very basics done at a MD, and the advisories done at a specialist.

I don't think MBS Exeter should be listed as 'recommended'

Please email me for full details I have retained all my communication with them

You do realise that this thread is 8 years old - a lot can change in that time!

I cannot possibly agree with any recommendation of MBS Exeter

I think this is confusion. There is a garage called MBS in Southapton who everyone seems to love

Sadly I have been a victim of MBS Exeter. Their skill level tripled my repair bill - I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt by suggesting it was not deliberate. They forgot to complete some programming tasks on the parts they supplied - I had to discover the problem. My vehicle was damaged (superficially) while in their care and they argued with me about this

Update RE: MBS i had a dreadful incident occur with my car

The serpentine belt broke and wrecked the power steering pump front seal and unknown to me at the time, a transmission cooler line at motorway speeds

Got recovered and after fixing the power steering then tested the car. After two miles I lost all drive. No forward or reverse

So I worked out the gearbox must have lost all of its ATF as well as the power steering. But now I had driven the car with very little ATF I was convinced the box would be toast

I rang various people and got big numbers and forecasts of doom, rang MBS who said test it before you throw in the towel and outlined a strategy

I invested £80 in parts to test the box and they were right, it was worth checking, it had survived it's 2 mile torture. This help made MBS no profit but saved my car from being sold for bits

I owe them a huge thanks. I can only conclude that any short comings in my previous encounter were not intended. To be fair they did polish out the marks that appeared on my car. So owe them massive thanks

Car karma is restored!
