Golf mk5 Gt TDi oil - Vin Diesel
Bit confuesd about topping up as the car came with a litre of shell helix ultra 5/30w but it doesnt match the spec (vw 506.01)listed in owners manual (realised other day) but had already used it up at last top up.

Bought some castrol SLX which matched spec in manual - not sure if it will need an oil change service now ?? Does anyone know as its supposed to be long life service regime ??

If your supposed to top up with vw506.01 why the hell do vw supply the shell stuff with the car ???

If you got oil with the car, I would hope that this was correct stuff.

I got oil with mine too. IIRC it is called Castrol SLX long-life II.

Not sure if standard SLX is the same or not. If it is the right stuff, it is mighty expensive at £11 or so for a litre.

If your car needs an oil change early due to the dealer supplying you with the wrong oil, I would be inclined to ask them to contribute!

Its the wrong oil for variable servicing regime, but it may be OK for fixed 10,000 intervals (you need to check). Castrol SLX long life II no longer exists - all Castrol synthetic is now known as Castrol Edge and it's £14 a litre, but check you buy the one which replaces SLX II, all the bottles are the same apart from the viscosity.

The helix oil is probably to 507 spec, otherwise known as SLX III. Its OK in TDI's, and will soon be all you can get (SLX II is only available from VAG dealers now, although oilman stocks an equivalent).
The castol edge stuff is a pain in the neck. They all look the same, so its easy to get the wrong one (the 0W30 stuff is not SLX II so beware)

Very confusing

The oil I bought is SLX longlife II 0/30w not the standard type as I thought and the spec is vw506.01 (cost about £14) - this matches spec in the manual for longlife servicing so its ok then ?????

The Helix stuff was 507.00 spec 5/30w - vw service said its ok as it was only used to top up and I can continue with the longlife service regime using the oil specced in manual.

So let me get this right - the next time I buy top up oil I need to buy Castrol Edge 506.01 0/30w spec ?????

If the Helix is 507.00 its OK - this has superceded 506.01. Castrol Edge 0/30W is also 507.00 specification - no such thing as Castrol Edge 0/30W 506.01!!!!

Now you are as confused as I was!

Arrgghhh - its all become clear now

Just had a look on the Castrol website

The Castrol Edge 5/30w 507.00 supersedes the SLX II longlife oil (specifically mentions this on the site). In this case the Shell Helix 507.00 oil which came with the car is the same spec as the new Castrol Edge oil which supersedes SLX II Longlife and is therefore ok (sigh of relief).

Why the hell doesnt the manual have the up to date spec in it then ?

Anyway at least something has been learnt today !!!!!

Had the same issue with an A4 Tdi. The manual specified 507.00 (because of particulate filter) but the top up oil was 506.01. Asked dealer if this was ok to put in because of reference to the particulate filter, but he only knew of a pollen filter in the car, so when he said it was ok I took it with a pinch of salt.

As I interpret it, Castrol SLXII (506.01) has been superceeded by 507.00, to cater the more stringent demands of longlife servicing PDi's with particulate filters. As my GolfV 105 (Euro4) does not have a particulate filter, I get my top up SLXII from my VW garage at £11.56/litre. Your experience, P_L just shows the varying levels of, er, understanding across dealers (applies to all manufacturers, not just VAG...)
