Finally got a pay-out from my insurers, and have found a nice 99 T-plate 1.6 GLXi, with Alloys & Air-Con, for £2.1K, which seems good for a 53K car. Engine same as my Beetle 1.6, the 100bhp one, so I know what to look for there - anything else go wrong on these as a whole I should look for ? Already noted slight leak in boot, which my local Skoda dealer says is a £100 rear-light fault to fix ....

has it been a minicab? Is that mileage genuine?
Sounds good value if it is.

I had a W reg Octavia SLX TDI for 3 years.
The niggles i had may not be relevant to yours, being a different trim and engine, but FWIW:
Plastic bit on top of the clutch pedal which operated the clutch (master) cylinder snapped off. Common apparently.
Seat scuffed and tore and wore where the rivets on the back of my jeans caught the seat.
Some of the frankly naff "wood" trim peeled off.
Ashtray was a bit fiddly.
Lots of clunking and banging from the front of the car especially when cold, i thought it was the suspension and indeed i think ball joints are a weakness on the Octavia (and A4)
Very low ground clearance, you will catch speed bumps if you go over too fast.
My cambelt problems was a garage issue and not relevant
ummm....
that's it. I was impressed with it, VW motoring for half the price. Can't comment on 1600 petrol, i would have thought that it would be underpowered as it is a very heavy car, but maybe not with 100bhp. Very good car, huge boot, comfy and reliable. Shop around for servicing though.
Price sounds OK, for comparison, check out T reg VW Bora prices and try not to snigger. Plus you get a hatchback.

Well the vast number of Skoda Octavia taxi drivers in my area love 'em and say they have few, if any, problems to worry about.
Their only complaint is that there isn't a Skoda dealership in the town and they have to travel for servicing etc.
But they clearly think it's well worth it (as well as going to Glasgow to buy them new from a specialist in selling to taxi operators) and certainly those Octavias that I've travelled in when using a taxi have seemed rattle free - good when you think of the hammering they must get.

Thanks everyone - all being well should pick up on Saturday - and luckily, as per HJ's thread elsewhere, the cambelt was done at 45k !

Apart from a new turbo at 25000 miles, my tdi has been fine over almost 2 years. Check electric mirrors and central locking all works ok. Drove a friend's 1.6 and it was very refined and quick enough for most people.
