My trusty Golf, 1988, high mileage but generally good running order has started intermittent misfiring, and now wont start at all! Have checked all obvious, and run through tests in Haynes. Appears to be a very weak, intermittent spark ? Can someone suggest what problem may be ?, Coil ? - How can you test it with a basic multimeter ? (Transistorised ignition!) Regards to all

and here, where you can ask if you don't find the answer, the search on this site isn't great:

Thanks for reply Harlequin, but had already worked my way through this list!

I take it you have checked your HT leads, they should be no more than 20 Kohms.I don't know the figures for your coil, you can check for continuity/very high resistance. The simplest way is substitution,if you can borrow one, even if not exactly the right one,you will know if yours is duff.

Why don't you just invest in a new set of spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm. That'd be like a birthday to your car.
Measure each plug lead for resistance with should be around 5kΩ per foot of lead. So a 24" lead should measure about 10kΩ. Change them if they're well out of this range.
That should cure your problem...

This site doesn't support the Ohms symbol.

Again, many thanks for your replies.
All 'service items', as you suggest, are replaced regularly including a recent set of leads, as one had previously become quite brittle. I've noted the resistance of leads at around 6.0 -7.0 ohms (not sure of correct scale!) with one out of line at around 17.0 ohms. Will replace this one again anyway.
Low tension circuit of coil is settling at 0.0 ohms, with High tension at 9.5 ohms. As you suggest, I'll exchange this for another of known quality, which is showing similar readings, and then I suspect Hall Sender in distributor. Would this likely to cause intermittent fault ?
Happy New Year to all!!

ive got a 1989 golf 1.6 ( driver ) this misfires when cold, then clears after about a minute. i changed the leads and plugs and cleaned the contacts in the dizzy, the car feels better but ive still got my misfire, i think its a carb problem.
if u think its the igniton side change all the parts ie.. coil pack, dizzy before u start going too complicated.

Finally solved the problem as TOTAL failure of all four ignition leads!!?? I replaced the one showing the high resistance (17ohms) and the old girl managed to fire on one cylinder, and then as I changed each of the others so she picked up one pot at a time. (The other three leads all tested OK at around 5-6 ohms ?)This despite the fact that the complete set were only 12 months old, relatively little mileage, and supposedly "quality" set i.e. they weren't cheap!
Anyone able to comment as to why the complete set should fail in this manner ?

"This despite the fact that the complete set were only 12 months old, relatively little mileage, and supposedly "quality" set i.e. they weren't cheap!"
Its all a case of being 'reassuringly expensive'. The level of quality was probably defined by how much they cost. I must admit, I wouldn't have expected the cheapest of the cheap to have failed in such a short time. What make were they and, if you don't mind me asking, how much were they? I paid £32.31 for a set of Beru ones to replace the ones on my 12 year old Polo.
|
I've replaced them with a set of Beru from my local indy VW specialist at around £25. At least she now starts promptly!
Still have a problem though, and despite taking off the wax stat and "testing" it in a pan of water, though it appeared to operate correctly, in situ it clearly isn't. If I wait till engine warm, and then jam open the wax stat mechanism, the idling revs drop & the car runs perfectly!
Have located a 'local'refurber of 2E2's on ebay, see link below, which appear good value,
Has anyone ever had any dealings with this person ?
and if so, any comment ?
Regards
Graham

i paid £28 for bosch leads including the one from the coil...
ive seen that refurb guy, as i have 2 have a pierburg 2E2.. i think you may as well IMO get another 80-90 quid and get a brand new weber replacement.. i cant remember the site that does these ill try and find out.. i think its £195 for the replacement kit for your (our) engine.. brackets, manual choke kit included
|
Being a tight-wad, I went for the re-furb in the end. The re-con man, one Roger Akers, gave a first class service, even came out and fitted the replacement for me, Golf now running better than it has in a very long time (Insert BIG smiley here!)
Would recommend this chap to anyone, and will be pleased to pass on details if anyone wants them.
My thanks to all those who replied previously.

i remember a number of years back i had an 18oo gl golf and had similar trouble, all we did was swap to a manual choke and had no trouble at all after that, cant say i remember the price though :)
