Looking for recommendations for a good decent car battery. The battery is to go into a 406 1.9 TD & will be mostly used by my wife to take herself to college & 2 of our kids to school. It will do no more than 8 miles a day MON-FRI with a distance run every other month. I'm thinking heavy duty but other peoples recommendations readily accepted.

TIA

Bosch from costco would be my choice. Cheap and good quality.

Yup, Bosch Silver. I bought a 72AH one from GSF for £52.88 at this time last year. I don't know about "heavy duty" though; I'd go by whatever is recommended in the handbook. It would be better to give the car a more healthy mileage -- extend those daily trips somewhat when possible (take the longer, pretty route if there is one?), use it for some weekend excursions? I've never been sure that diesels are better than petrol engines at coping with the harmful effects of short trips.

I agree, Varta or BOSCH Silver (both made by Varta)

I would agree but even that may not be enough... see my comments below.

I have always understood that you have to be wary not getting the recommended size /duty battery. Tempting though it is, to have more in reserve, the charging may be affected.

I discovered that, according to Bosch web site, I need a very specific battery type for my common 98 Mondeo and this does not refer to the physical size.
My local Varta supplier was not aware of this.

any good battery retailer should know that the battery should be matched to the manufacturers spec and alternator output specific to the "trim" of the car,i would recommend a motor factors for a battery as they have both the relevant books to sell the correct one and they also have a good turnround so that you are not buying a battery that has been on the shop shelf for the last 2 years slowly sulphating.

Irrespective of the battery capacticy (Ampere Hours), for a diesel car i would be more interesed in its cranking capacity, as they draw a much higher current when cranking/starting than a petrol car.

The battery might have a 72 AH rating but can it discharge fast enough to spin the starter on a cold morning.

Absolutely right, the most important aspect of a battery for a diesel would be maximum instantaneous current in 100's of Amps.
