Rear fog lights - L'escargot
Not so long ago young drivers considered it "cool" to drive with rear foglights permanently on, day or night. I haven't noticed this lately so has this fashion been superseded by something else? Or have their rear foglight bulbs all burnt out through over-use?

Never seen this (And I'm 21) it's the front ones that are 'bling' (Yeah, right). Maybe they just had the one switch?
Rear fog lights - L'escargot
Maybe it happened longer ago than what I imagined. It may have been before you were old enough to drive.

Hmm, i'm 33 and never seen this either (been driving 16 years). Front fogs yes, rears just make you look a complete dork (as opposed to a bit of one with the fronts)

Rear fog lights enable you to be seen and this is their sole purpose! They don't make you 'look' like anything.

Ever since rear high intensity lights were fitted, there has been a sizeable minority of drivers who forget to switch them off after (legitimate) use. I wish manufacturers were forced to fit "passing contact switches / relays" which reset to off every time the ignition is switched off.

I've not noticed turning them on, as a fashion item, though.

Travel along the Rainford bypass when it's raining and you'll see a few - or possibly not - as you'll be blinded.
Rear fog lights - Adam {P}
Funny you shoudl say that Robbie.

I was driving down the bypass before towards the 58 and I passed a Golf with it's rear fogs on.

It was 9:30.

Happens all the time.

Incidentally Adam, you never got back to my post in "Show us your car" when I asked if you, or I, was colour blind. Your car does not look gold coloured, more like a silvery blue.

Sorry Robbie - I never saw your post.

I'll reply to it now. (Most definitely Gold though - I'll post another pic)

Ford Focus and Mondeo and I expect quite a few more Fords switch off the fog lights when you switch off all the rest.
This great design of a single switch does not allow rear fogs on unless you put the front fogs on first
So if I want to pose with my front fogs then those following will have to enjoy the rear dazzle.

Well done Ford.

I'd be surprised if most cars didn't arrange the fog lamp switch it switches off with the lights.

On the Octavia, the light switch had to be pulled out to turn the fogs on and you have to turn the fogs off to turn the lights off, and the light switch is common across VAG.

My S reg Micra had the fog light switch on the stalk, again lights off = fog light off.

Our Citroen C3 has an arrangement smilar to the Nissan, but front fogs on first.

Does anybody have or know of a car designed within the last ten years that you can accidently leave the rear fogs on?

Likewise on my Xsara. Rear fogs come off when the headlights are switched off. Last time my foglights were used was during the MOT.

Sorry just read that again.

What you posted was that you have to put on the front fogs on to be able to put on the rears.

So if you wanted to "pose" with the front fogs on, you can do so and not have put the rears. It'll be a two position switch, front fogs only, and all fogs.

So Ford have it right don't they?

Mare. Thanks yes you are right...that did come out wrong!
Ford have got it wrong for the vast majority.

I have to pose with my front fogs on if I want the rear fogs on. The last time I needed front fogs was about 10 years ago and the vehicle I had then did not have any.

I think foglights built into rotary headlight switches are bad, it is onvious that most cars with their rear fogs on have these switches, and dim drivers who just twist and go and pull aswell.

Ford Fiesta and Escorts are worst (probably as they have no front fogs on most models) Rovers are second worst followed by Nissan Toyotas.

Subarus have rotary fog light switches; one click for fronts and then a further twist against a fairly hefty spring for the rear, both go off when ignition and/or sidelights are switched off.

Ah but they're separate to the light switch and certainly in the C3 you can't switch them on accidently.

Worst car i can think of in respect of fog light switching was the old Nissan 200SX with pop up lights, the rear fog switch was on the bottom right of the dashboard and very easily knocked by your knee when you got in.

Anyway, does anybody else recall this trend in the OP?

They're not called front fog lights on Fords anymore. According the adverts played recently on the radio, they're now called sporty lights.

Yes DD, I saw Focus or Fiesta advert on TV where a nice looking blonde lady in a car meets a man dressed as a penguin in the arctic, and the narrator says, "Now get extra special alloys and sporty front fog lights for the price of an LX" - maybe I'm getting old?

Sorry Sir. I did see the TV adverts so no excuses.
Oh dear I cant keep up anymore.

I fitted twin matching rear fog lights to my 1600E very early in its life so I guess I was well in front of the game then.
That was a DIY effort but now it is all standard.
It did have 88BHP and 96mph ... will that let me off punishment?
Rear fog lights - Cliff Pope
I can't recall ever seeing rear fog lights deliberately left on in the day - much more likely to be just forgetfulness, or couldn't care less anyway.
But I do remember when long before high-level brake lights were standard, it was cool to fit extra brake lights on the parcel shelf. Then these were banned, but then they were made compulsory.

The fashions go round and round. Before long someone here will be arguing that high intensity rear lights (ie fog lights) should be obligatory in the interests of all-day visibility and road safety.
Then someone else will complain about the dazzle, but someone else will say get your eyes tested, you don't have to look at them.
Then I will point out that cyclists and pedestrians don't have fog lights. Someone will say there should be more cycle paths or better public transport, but meanwhile let's just have as many lights on as possible.
Rear fog lights - nickKK
I saw a bus (yes a public transport bus) a couple of weeks back with his rear fogs on !!

The ford I drive now turns the rear fogs off when my headlights go off - but I need to push the button again (once headlights are on ) to get them back on, previous design was a simple on off switch ont he dashboard = headlights on will give fogs.

I did though get blinded by a pair of front fogs a couple of days ago (both lamps were aimed directly and squarely towards the oncoming traffic very dangerous )

So they would be totally useless in fog, where the whole point is to aim the beams low so that they illuminate the road and not the fog.
I think that demonstrates that "fog" lights are in many cases simply "look at me showing off" lights.

Does that mean that we have to have "sporty visibility" before we can use them? Probably won't be long before weather forecasters catch on and use this phrase. ;-)

Yes, providing you're also wearing a baseball cap back to front , have blue LED washer jets, and a Fido Dido transfer in the back window.
Rear fog lights - AR-CoolC
Blimey Dave, Fido Dido transfers, thats going back a bit. I don't think I've seen one of them for about 4 years!! along with three spoke alloy wheels.
