Took my "XXX" (3 year old car) into a XXX main dealer this week for a warranty job. The air-con was a bit smelly, and needed deodorising to remove the bacteria from the matrix.
They kept it for the day, and when I collected it on Tuesday, all seemed fine. However I happened to check what they had done this morning and discovered that the dealer had removed the cabin pollen filter and not bothered to replace it with anything.
On this particular car, the filter is fitted behind the dash, so not somewhere your average joe-punter would bother to look.
Is this an ethical practice? Surely they should have replaced the filter (either under warranty, or billed me for it)? The maintenance schedule says that it doesn't need replacing for another year or 10,000 miles, but if they'd told me it needed replacing I would happily have paid for it. The fact that they just removed it and didn't bother putting a new one in, nor did they tell me what they had done leads me to wonder whether this is ethical.
I mean, if it didn't serve a purpose, then the manufacturer wouldn't bother fitting them would they?
* XXX I've not disclosed the make or model because I don't want to prejudice any responses! I'll let the cat out of the bag (if anyone's interested) after I've had some responses. Actually - have a guess who the manufacturer is - just out of curiosity! There's a prize for the first correct answer ;-)

Ill hedge my bets .Is it a Nissan ?Primera?

Cant be ! They would have done nothing about the smell, said there is nothing wrong and charged you an hours non-warranty work labour cost !!

Fair point.. OK then - one go each.
VW - WRONG!
AUDI A4 - WRONG! (it's our OTHER car!)
MERCEDES - WRONG!
|
NISSAN - WRONG! (although warmer!)
|
It can only be the customer service legends at Renault! (Whats the prize? ;)
|
Scratch my first guess. I've changed my mind to Honda. :)
|
CONGTRATULATIONS! Yes, it was a Honda.
As a reward, you've won a short holiday.
|
Did you enjoy it? ;-)
Anyone any thoughts as to whether it was ethical or not?
|
Incompetence should not be confused with a lack of ethics..
After all they just forgot to replace it.
Did they charge you?

Main Dealer = Arthur Daley with a franchise and an expensive flashy showroom. Why are people so surprised when they get bad service...
|
Yep - been back and they admitted there was one in the car before they started. They couldn't explain why one was not refitted.
A replacement wasn't drawn from parts store for the job...
Not going to make a big deal out of it... am giving them benefit of the doubt and putting it down to human error rather than deliberate omission.
Just makes you wonder though.... joe punter Mr Average wouldn't check!

A friend got a quote for a the basic service (service one or whatever its called) for his 318i - under warranty so tied to the dealers, for servicing. They wanted over £300 - for what amounted to an oil change and once over??
Took it to a BMw specialist - I think autotechnic - which are under the same umbrella of the dealer - but charge sane (realistic?) prices.
Charged him £115 - gave a the car a good valet too.
What happened to that law that was to free people from the clutches of the dealers? as it gone through yet?

Most parts that don't get fitted or replaced end up on ebay or used in 'weekend' jobs.
