Is this a Scam?? - moosh
My sister recently advertised her Renault Megane for sale in Autotrader.

She received persistent calls from a person representing 'Renault Finance'.
They claimed the had a customer for the car at or near full asking price. They wanted an upfront fee of £90 to introduce the 'prospective buyer'.

I advised her it was probably a scam and she didn't get involved.

Anybody any experience??

If you wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, you could contact Renault Finance yourself to see if this is their policy.

I suspect not and that it's a scam.

In short-yes it is a scam. It now happens very frequently. Just tell her to ignore all calls that "offer" prospective buyers for any fee.

She'll get nothing. If they do anything at all they'll just send her car's details to a bunch of people who don't want to buy it. They'll probably do nothing.

She'll also probably find that as someone who's selling a car she becomes someone who's also buying a car and ends up having a bunch of other suckers' car details sent to her.

This is the knightmare that almost everyone goes through when selling a used car privately. I recently got so many calls from canvassers, I only wished they were in front of me and not at the end of a phone line if you know what I mean !!!

Recently been selling my car and had calls like this about 3 times a day. One of the companies that do this was recently featured on watchdog.

It's an old trick and some of these companies even record your conversation and then edit it to give the impression that you agreed to them offering a vehicle to "buyers" they have "waiting."

When they phone, ask them to send their contract details through to your solicitor so that he can check them, then smile as you hear a click as the phone line goes dead.

I sold my car through Autotrader and, funny enough, I had no dodgy calls 3rd time around

(1st and 2nd time round, I had no calls at all).

3rd time, the only calls I had were from genuine purchasers and finally sold the car to a chap not too far from me. Met him at his work, went with him to his bank while he organised transfer. It hit my account in 2 hours, he got his car that night. Am I unusual?
