1.6 Auto Oil Leak - allan doc
I've just purchased a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Mrk 3 (Automatic). I have just noticed today that there is an oil leak somewhere around the exhaust at the cylinder block. The temperature gauge also goes up quite quick. Has Anyone got any idea were it could be coming from?

Vauxhall Astra Oil Leak - piston power
start from the top and work down, possible to be rocker cover, its easy to change, or head gasket. is there any water in? does the rad fan work? its all a cheap repair best start with a cloth and wipe up some oil and look for leaks.

Oil leaks from the camshaft housing cover gasket are very common on 8-valve (SOHC) Vauxhalls. They should be replaced at 18,000 services.

Yes, that definitely used to be the case. In the late 80's or early 90's, the design was changed with the newer types of cam cover incorporating locating dowels which also served as stops, preventing over-enthusiastic mechanics from crushing the gasket by over-tightening the cam cover bolts. Of course, it's still possible to over-tighten the bolts on the newer type, but doing so won't crush the gasket.

They should be replaced at 18,000 services.

I've never seen that written down anywhere. Although we did used to change a **lot** of cam cover gaskets prior to the design change. (Excellent little job for bumping up the bonus figures!)

I was referring to the later SOHC engines, with dowels to prevent over tightening - they still leak!

It's not on a service schedule but experience shows that they leak if not changed regularly.
